THE LASER DENTISTRY REVOLUTION TECHNOLOGY MAKES LIGHT WORK OF GUM RECONTOURING
Lasers have been around for decades and have had medical uses since the beginning. They are now becoming more prevalent in dental care, with astounding results. I’m proud to offer laser dentistry at my practice and bring its many benefits to my patients.
Now, the procedure is much more straightforward. I regularly remove gum tissue myself as a part of the central crown or veneer procedure. As a result, lasers regularly save our patients time and elevate their experience. Unlike cutting or drilling tissue, which is painful and requires anesthesia, lasers vaporize the tooth and gum they touch. The process produces minimal pain, and the laser promotes blood clotting to reduce bleeding. Lasers are also extremely precise, so I can remove even the tiniest amounts of gum without affecting healthy tissue nearby.

There are two types of dentistry lasers: hard tissue and soft tissue. Dentists use hard tissue lasers to remove bone and tooth from

While laser use in dentistry has been around for at least 30 years, I like to give new technology time to develop and build a track record of success before incorporating it into my work. So, I waited until 2008 to bring lasers to my work. We primarily use it in our office for gum recontouring, which has revolutionized our care.

Laser dentistry has revolutionized how I practice and made my patients much happier in the
process. It’s just one of the many ways we strive to give our patients the best possible experience and provide the highest level of care every day.
Before laser dentistry, placing crowns and veneers was often a much lengthier process. When the gums didn’t match the patient’s new teeth or were uneven, we had to call a specialist. The specialist would visit our office, numb the patient, cut the gums appropriately, and create sutures. Then, the patient would heal for six weeks before we could continue our work.

LEVEL UP YOUR NEXT FAMILY GAME NIGHT Impress Your Kids With These Fresh Choices
If you’re tired of playing Catan every family board game night, we have good news: There are brand-new games in town! Consider adding these three options to your family’s stash. Wavelength Not only is this game perfect for playing with your whole family (ages 5 and up), but it also actively encourages conversation! Up to 12 players can split into teams and use hints from their peers to guess their teammates’ opinions on various topics. The issues can range from the merit of hit movies to “Where, on the scale of wet to dry, is spaghetti?” The New York Times’ Wirecutter ranked Wavelength among the best board games of 2022 and recommended it to fans of other interactive, team-based guessing games like Codenames. Steam Up: A Feast of Dim Sum Who doesn’t love a food-themed board game? This fun, fast-paced game for 2–5 players, ages
14 and up, comes with a Lazy Susan filled with dim sum ingredients. You play as a Zodiac animal and aim to collect more dim sum than any other players. Instead of fortune cookies, fortune cards help determine your luck! “If you’re looking for a fresh new party game in 2023, Steam Up looks like a real tabletop joy,” GamesHub reports. Steam Up was launched on
Kickstarter and, as we write this, is available for preorder and expected to ship soon.
Small World Kids ages 8 and up will love this board game, especially if they’re “Lord of the Rings” fans. As Wirecutter explains, “Imagine a game of Risk set in Middle-earth that didn’t take as long to play as rewatching all of the ‘Lord of the Rings’ films would. That’s pretty much the experience of Small World, an area-control game filled with elves, dwarves, and halflings, among others.” When you sit down to play, you choose a band of magical creatures and a power, then set up your “empire” and battle the other players for land and gold. At the end of 60–80 minutes of strategizing, the richest player wins the game. If any of these games catch your eye, head to your local game store and ask if they’re available, or jump online to snag them yourself!
A WORD TO THE WISE When Wisdom Teeth Removal Is Necessary
To modern humans, wisdom teeth mostly feel like an inconvenience. They seem to exist only to be removed! But once upon a time, they were like any other teeth in our mouth, and decay or breaks were the only reasons for extraction. Times have changed, and so have we. Humans have evolved to eat softer foods, and as a result, our jaws have shrunk. Our ancestors lived with their wisdom teeth just fine, but today there’s usually not enough room in our mouths. Some people still have large enough jaws to accommodate wisdom teeth, but they’re a shrinking portion of the population. Further, these patients sometimes struggle to keep their wisdom teeth clean. Getting a toothbrush and floss that far back in your mouth is difficult, so some people remove their wisdom teeth to prevent decay, irritation, and infection. But for most, the problem is crowding. Not all wisdom teeth come in, but when they do, they often shift other teeth in the mouth or even damage them. Particularly for patients who have had braces, wisdom teeth can undo years of dental work and make a once-straight smile crooked. Therefore, it can be wise to remove them preemptively.
Impacted wisdom teeth have their own problems. While some people never have any symptoms, others experience pain. Meanwhile, those who don’t have direct pain from the wisdom teeth can have side effects. Bleeding gums, loss of bone, and bad breath are only some of the potential consequences.
No one will claim oral surgery to remove wisdom teeth is fun. But fortunately, the process is highly bearable. Except in particularly complex cases, patients generally don’t experience pain for more than a day or so after the procedure. Further, you have anesthetic options. While most extractions use local anesthesia to prevent pain during surgery, some patients opt for sedation, so they will not be conscious of the procedure. Many people question whether they truly need their wisdom teeth removed, particularly when they are not feeling pain. The decision to undergo surgery is personal, but if your dentist suggests wisdom tooth removal, there is probably a good reason. Consider their opinion carefully before deciding to keep them intact.

Boost Your Health in 11 Minutes
The Latest Science on Exercise
Doctors have long understood that regularly exercising is one of the best things we can do for our health. Yet, many of us still struggle to find the time to get moving. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommend 150 minutes per week of moderate-intensity exercise, which is daunting for many. In some cases, knowing they can’t reach that number demotivates people from exercising at all. But a study released in March 2023 found that even half that amount can have massive benefits. Published in “The British Journal of Sports Medicine,” the authors reviewed 196 previously-published studies on self-reported activity. The data included more than 30 million worldwide participants, and researchers discovered that people could dramatically improve their health with only 11 minutes of exercise per day. The authors uncovered a remarkable 23% reduction in early death, defined as death between 30–70. People who met this criterion were also 17% less likely to develop cardiovascular disease and 7% less likely to develop cancer than sedentary people. The study concluded that if every person exercised for 11 minutes daily, 1 in 10 early deaths could be prevented.
Refer a Friend, Get a Brighter Smile! That’s right! Every time you refer a friend to Dr. Maddahi, you get one FREE teeth cleaning! In the end, 150 minutes of exercise per week is ideal, but 11 minutes daily can also significantly benefit your health. This new study proves that any activity is better than no exercise. Even if you can only fit in time to exercise once per week, you’ll improve your health more than by sitting down. While 150 minutes is ideal, we should never let perfect be the enemy of good. So, get out there and get moving! Unsurprisingly, more is better — to a point. Researchers continued to see more improvement in health outcomes for those who got 150 minutes of exercise per week. Those who exercised 150–300 minutes weekly had only minor improvements in health, and exercising more than 300 minutes per week had no additional discernible impact. Eleven minutes per day or 75 minutes per week is a very achievable goal for most people. The exercise should be moderate-intensity, elevating your heart rate. Briskly walking, a short bike ride, playing with your children, or dancing can all meet the criteria.

OH, THE PLACES YOU’LL SLEEP! The Traveling Sleep Trend Shaping Hotels
Park Hyatt New York (NYC): This hotel features a “Sleep Suite” designed by Bryte, a company that uses AI to facilitate sleep. The room touts an intuitive “Restorative Bed,” which adjusts to relieve pressure points and controls climate temperature throughout the night, according to each person’s needs. This suite also includes an array of soothing essential oils, a diffuser, and books about sleep.
If you’ve ever planned a vacation, you’ve probably picked a few key places to visit, like a museum, restaurant, or historic site. However, a new vacation trend is becoming increasingly popular: sleep tourism, where a traveler plans their entire vacation to get the best quality sleep during their time away. Before, common goals for vacations were to eat delicious foods, stay up late to see the sights, and fit in as much activity as possible. However, this left travelers completely exhausted. And as our culture continues to understand how important sleep is to our health, more people are prioritizing rest even while they’re away.
The Cadogan, a Belmond Hotel (London): This hotel offers a “sleep concierge,” which boasts prerecorded sleep
meditations and a pillow selection menu for every type of sleeper. Sleepers can even benefit from the hotel’s weighted blankets, scented pillow mist service, and their proprietary sleep tea.
But being a sleep tourist is about more than going to bed early and ensuring you get your recommended eight hours of rest. It’s about building your vacation around sleep. Some hotels even offer rooms tailored to sleep tourists, with amenities so popular that their sleep options have become regular offerings. So, if sleep tourism sounds like something you’d be interested in, here are three hotels that help you catch those z’s.
Zedwell (London): The first ever “sleep-centric” hotel, Zedwell uses
recycled materials to insulate every door, wall, and floor from sound. This hotel also purifies the air within the hotel and fills every space with ambient lighting.
