THREE’S COMPANY Chatting With Lauren, Janae, and Taylor

“Well, right now it’s a pretend podcast,” Lauren clarifies. “The working title is ‘Average

each hygienist one-on-one, but if you are ever lucky enough to sit with all three of them at one time, you find yourself surrounded by the best sort of laughter. “I have never worked with so many people I like,” Taylor says when they all sit down to share stories. “I started here for an internship, and when I got my dental hygiene license, I knew this was where I wanted to stay. It’s a great work environment, and I love everyone here.”

“We’re not the best at that game,” Taylor admits. “We named our team ‘Average Josephines,’ though when it comes to cornhole, we might be below average. We wanted to make life a bit more exciting, so we

decided to start a podcast. We have a list of topics, and we’ve even interviewed Janae!”

“We have truly awesome patients,” Janae says. “They remember things about us. I have one patientwho’sbeenhereforyears, andshealways askshowI’mdoing.Ireallyloveitwhenapatient asksaboutmylittleboy,Mac,andIknowLauren and Taylor like it when people ask about their dogs.”

“If by ‘interview,’ you mean ‘talk about grocery shopping,’” Janae laughs. “We played this game where I brought my receipt, and they tried to guess what the most expensive item was. As far as podcasts go, it’s hard to say if anyone would listen to us, but we still have a lot of fun when we’re together.” I cannot begin to explain how happy it makes me to know my team gets along so well. What’s more, I know they are all skilled in their profession and ready to help anyone who walks through the door, as you can tell when Lauren describes her favorite part of the job: “Sometimes a new patient will come in, and you can tell right away they are nervous. It’s my job to walk them through the appointmentandhelpthemfeelcomfortable. By the end of the appointment, it’s wonderful to see how relaxed that person has become. They’re not afraid anymore! I’m happy to

“There’s a big difference between ‘work friends’ and ‘real friends.’ When you spend time with Lauren, Janae, and Taylor, you can tell their friendship is true.”

“Skwish and Olive are doing very well,” Lauren confirms with a laugh, referring to her pugs.

“So are Bailey, Basil, and Bentley,” Taylor adds.

“Good, because you’re never allowed to leave us,” Lauren informs her with a teasing grin.

Hiring a team you like working with is challenging enough, but finding people who love each other as much as my hygienists do is nearly impossible. These women are one in a million, and I’ll happily admit I’m lucky to have them. - Jason A. Schermer

Sometimes dentists say, “My staff are all friends,” but there’s a big difference between “work friends” and “real friends.” When you spend time with Lauren, Janae, and Taylor, you can tell their friendship is true. Lauren and Taylor even started a podcast!

CLEANING ‘ RIP-OFFS ’ That Actually Work

as soap becomes more concentrated, using too much can damage your machine. That’s what makes detergent pods so handy. They don’t look like they can clean all your dishes or an entire load of clothes, but they actually provide the perfect amount for modern machines. You save money on detergent and machine repair! Foam Cleaning Blocks Anything with “magic” in the title sounds like a scam. For this reason, you may have avoided the Mr. Clean Magic Eraser and similar melamine foam products. But this is one case where the product lives up to its wild claims. Melamine foam is abrasive and can break down and remove material from fine cracks and textures, making it an effective cleaner. It can be used to whiten sneakers, clean tub scum, and remove permanent marker from your fridge. earned cash, consumers have wised up and are quick to write off perceived scams. Still, every now then, you get lucky, and the cheap white sponge really can make your stove look like new again. But you should still think twice before you say yes to gas station sushi. Since the snake oil salesmen in the days of old first tricked trusting folks out of their hard-

“Awesome.” Surely, this knock-off soap can’t work as well as your brand-name products, right? You’d be surprised. Online reviewers sing Awesome’s praises, suggesting it should really be a higher price for how well it works. Just make sure you wear gloves when you use it. Detergent Pods You use too much soap in your washing machine and dishwasher. At least, that’s what the New York Times reported as the No. 1 complaint from repair people and appliance experts. Modern appliances are designed to use less water, and

And, when it comes to cleaning house, we can all use a little “easier.” Check out these products you may have already written off and let them surprise you. which is causing the sensitivity. It can be hard to spot a fine crack in a tooth using your bathroom mirror, but in-office technology helps us quickly identify any damage. Usually, a crown can keep the tooth from breaking further. Occasionally, the crack may reach the nerve and require a root canal or an implant to repair. 3. A Problem Hidden Within Let’s say there’s no tooth mobility and none of your teeth are cracked, but you still feel pain when you bite down. The next step is to use an X-ray to look for evidence of an abscess or infection at the

1. Tooth Mobility

When inspecting tooth pain, a dentist checks to see if the tooth, or part of the

tooth, in question moves with pressure. Mobility might be caused by plaque buildup, an irregular bite, or an issue with how your teeth line up. If this is the case, a slight polishing of the tooth that’s hitting too hard can clear up the mess right away. 2. A Crack in the Enamel Visual inspection may show no mobility, but we could find a crack in your tooth

Thanksgiving at America’s Resort

THANKSGIVING AT AMERICA’S RESORT CARVE YOUR TURKEY AT THE GREENBRIER

This Thanksgiving, many Americans plan to go over the river and through the woods to sleep on the air mattress at grandmother’s house. But your family Thanksgiving doesn’t have to be crowded and uncomfortable. For generations, The Greenbrier Resort in White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia, has brought families together for a weekend of true American elegance. The local hot springs have been popular with travelers since 1778, but The Greenbrier didn’t come to life until 1913. The sprawling 710- room national landmark sits on 11,000 acres of

rolling hills and has been described as “‘Monte Carlo’ meets ‘Gone With the Wind.’” The blend of Colonial decor and Hollywood Regency flourishes make guests feel as if they have stepped back in time, while still offering all the modern amenities. Mom and Grandma relax in the spa, Grandpa enjoys a round of golf, the siblings all go off- roading in a Jeep, and later, the whole family will face off in a game of laser tag. With 55 leisure activities offered at the resort, make every day as busy or as relaxing as you want, before enjoying a gourmet dinner at one of the resort’s six full-time restaurants.

The Greenbrier is a dream getaway anytime of the year, but America’s resort really goes all out for the traditional American holiday, Thanksgiving. Family members from every generation can find something fun to do before the family gathers together for the massive Thanksgiving brunch in The Greenbrier’s Colonial Hall. The award-winning culinary brigade serves up Thanksgiving classics, like soft rolls and roasted turkey, alongside marinated mussels and ricotta tortellini. Make time for the horse-drawn carriage ride and evening gala, and you have the perfect Thanksgiving.
