the other side a chance to intercept and score their own points. Coach Naismith has a personal bias against that tactic. “I hate watching it so I’m not going to be the one to do it,” he said The final EOSSAA match came down to the North Dundas Devils versus the Rideau Lions from Leeds-Grenville with the Lions taking the match. Rideau moves on to rep- resent Eastern Ontario in single-A senior boys basketball at the upcoming Ontario Federation of Secondary School Athletics (OFSSA) championships. The basketball season is done now for the SFX Falcons and co-coaches Scott Stoqua and David MacKinnon expressed satisfac- tion with the past season. “Our goal for the season was to win the league championship,” said Stoqua. “Every- thing after that was bonus.” Next year will be a rebuilding year for the Falcons as the coaches expect to lose four or five key players to graduation in June. But Stoqua is optimistic about the team’s chances again on the court in the 2013- 2014 season given the past two years of league championship victories for SFX. “We’ve established something that is pretty strong,” he said. “Our goal next year will be to win the championship again.” Instead he discovered wheelchair rugby during his 18 months of surgery and reha- bilitation therapy which led him on a jour- ney through his rehab and the global spot- light as part of the 2012 Olympics. “It was a great feeling to know I was repre- senting my country in front of 80,000 peo- ple in the stadium and millions at home,” Dagenais said. He told students how during his therapy period and afterwards he has had to re- learn to do many things that he once took for granted. About 75 per cent of his body remains paralyzed and he has had to work to overcome that handicap during his day to day life. “I had to learn how to dress myself again, and how to write simple messages,” he said.

ROCKLAND | Rockland students got to meet an Olympian. Patrice Dagenais, silver medallist with Team Canada’s wheelchair rugby squad at the London 2012 Paralympics Games, was on the road with his teammates from the Ottawa Stingers wheelchair rugby club, to talk to students as part of Canadian Para- lympics Schools Week activities throughout Canada. “This is what I do for a living,” Dagenais told high school and elementary students at the Rockland YMCA/YWCA. “It’s a pretty cool job.” The 28-year-old Embrun athlete ex- plained how a construction accident left

“These are the kinds of things that you just take for granted.” Now since the Olympics, one of his goals is to help show others that having a handi- cap does not mean not having a life, or not having any dreams to achieve. “I want kids to know that if something bad happens,”he said,“there is always a way to get around it if you work hard and stay focused.” Students like Senga-Jean Cormier heard Dagenais’message loud and clear. “I really liked how he wasn’t afraid to tell his story,” said Cormier. “Sometimes I get

HAMMOND | The Falcons lost a few feath- ers in the final minutes of their consola- tion finals match against the Jaguars from St. Joe. Hammond’s Saint Francis Xavier Catholic High School and St. Joseph High School of Barrhaven clawed away at each other on the basketball court during the Feb. 22 finals matches of the Eastern Ontario Sec- ondary School Athletic Association (EOS- SAA) senior boys basketball championship. The two teams were close to a tie score in the last quarter until St. Joe began creep- ing ahead on the points in the final minutes of play and took the game and third-place spot in the tournament with 40-35 over SFX. “Very close and well-fought game,” said Jaguars Coach Chris Naismith. He credited his team’s rebounding skill as a deciding factor in the game. “I think our persistence in rebounding and giving up right to the very end,”he said. Most coaches, when their teams have a slight lead on the scoreboard during the final minutes of play will urge their players to use the “keep away” tactic of holding on to the ball and just passing it around rather than risk another basket and thus giving
