Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, many airlines disbanded their teams by laying off staff and, to a certain extent, lost know-how. Turkish Airlines differentiated itself from the rest of the industry by not laying off any personnel. During the transition to remote working, Turkish Airlines provided online training to its employees, enabling them to develop personally and professionally, thus increasing their knowledge, rather than losing it. Turkish Airlines continued to upgrade its fleet, adding 21 new generation aircraft to the fleet in 2021.
Turkish Airlines closely examined its revenues during the pandemic and forecast that passenger revenues would decrease significantly due to travel restrictions, while new opportunities would arise in the cargo area, and formulated new strategies accordingly. As the pandemic progressed, the air cargo sector became key for airlines. By obtaining the necessary permits from the relevant authorities and making some modifications, Turkish Airlines became a pioneer by carrying cargo on board passenger aircraft to meet the demand against the decrease in cargo capacity caused by the passenger aircraft grounded due to the pandemic. During the pandemic, Turkish Airlines converted more than 30 passenger aircraft for use in cargo operations.
