DON’T BE A CREDIT FRAUD VICTIM Protect Your Credit Card Info With These 5 Pro Tips

Credit card fraud can feel like a very invasive, violating crime when it happens to you. Suddenly, none of your assets or information feel safe. You can prevent the worst from happening, however, if you follow these five tips designed specifically for consumers in 2021. NO. 1: DON’T USE UNSECURE WEBSITES. If a site is truly secure, you’ll see a padlock on the left side of the address bar at the top of your browser, and the web address will start with “HTTPS.” Never enter your credit card number on a website that isn’t secure — any business that doesn’t protect its customers’ information probably doesn’t deserve your money. NO. 2: BEWARE OF PHISHING SCAMS. No matter what the caller ID says, the SSA will NEVER call you to confirm your Social Security number or account information in order to continue getting Social Security checks. Most banks and government agencies will never call you first to reach you; they’ll reach you by mail or email. And even in those cases, remember that the banks and government will never ask you to confirm intimate information over email or the phone. NO. 3: LOOK OUT FOR SKIMMERS. Many credit card thieves will use a device called a “skimmer,” hidden on ATMs and fuel pumps, to “skim” the data from the magnet strip on

the back of your credit card. To avoid skimmers, look for signs of tampering at your gas pump or ATM. If the card swipe seems loose or strangely bulkier than other stations, or if the PIN pad is bulkier or different from others, that may be a sign of tampering. If you’re unsure, try to go inside a bank or pay for your gas inside the store.

NO. 4: NEVER POST SENSITIVE INFORMATION ON SOCIAL MEDIA. Many scammers will comb through social media to look for people who overshare on social media, including financial data. Be wary of pictures and make sure your credit card or ID is never caught in view or inside any reflections. NO. 5: GET COMFORTABLE WITH MOBILE PAYMENT APPS. Using Apple Pay, Samsung Pay, or PayPal is actually a great way of avoiding skimmers! These apps pay through tokenization, which allows you to pay without exposing any credit card information. Even if your transaction is leaked to a skimmer, your information is safe.

Whether you’re back-to-school shopping or buying gas, we hope you shop safely out there!
