SYNTERO’S NEW GROUPS AND RESOURCES ADDRESS THE CHANGING NEEDS OF A DIVERSE POPULATION
Melanin Matters Melanin Matters provides a place for Black, Indigenous and people of color (BIPOC) teens to process, gain support and to feel as though they are not alone in an inclusive space. Participants will be able to communicate, address issues that may be impacting their mental health, such as racism, exposure to traumatic events in the community, the media, social justice, inequity and racial identity and ways to build self-esteem and resilience. Group meeting dates and times will be announced this fall via syntero.org, facebook.com/ SynteroOhio and instagram.com/syntero_ohio. Melanin Moms Mothers, particularly BIPOC moms, are feeling the overwhelming burden of society now more than ever, with the effects of the pandemic, racial injustice, politics, work, educating children and managing households. The Melanin Moms support group provides a space for BIPOC mothers to connect, support one another, and gain new perspectives on common issues impacting their daily lives. Throughout the pandemic, Syntero has provided innovative programming to meet the growing need for behavioral health and wellness services for Central Ohioans. As people begin to resume “normal” activities, as well as build and re-establish relationships and routines, Syntero continues to provide programs and services to help people from all walks of life in every step of their journeys. The following list of Syntero’s new and upcoming service offerings and resources is offered to community members free of charge: Celebrate Youth Celebrate Youth is the newest group provided by Syntero’s LGBTQ+ Program. The group is for gender-expansive, -creative, -diverse and -exploring school-age youth (approximately ages 5-11) to develop pro-social relationships, build skills, and explore, affirm and celebrate their identities. Celebrate Youth currently meets virtually every second and fourth Monday from 4:30 to 5:15 p.m. No intake or referral is needed to participate. CollegeConnect CollegeConnect is a four-part workshop series intended for college students entering their sophomore, junior and senior years. Students will learn how to manage school stressors, receive support from peers, and gain coping and regulation skills. Topic areas include navigating college during the pandemic; stress and time management; motivation; mental health and coping; and navigating relationships with friends, family, romantic interests and others. Workshop dates and times will be announced this fall via syntero.org, facebook.com/SynteroOhio and instagram.com/syntero_ohio. Grandparents Resource Book Syntero’s Older Adults Program has developed a resource book with information to help grandparents who have taken on a caregiver or guardian role for their grandchildren.
