Le gouvernement Ford a récemment dévoilé son nouveau programme d’édu- cation sexuelle qui ressemble de près à celui du précédent gouvernement libéral sous Kathleen Wynne. Après leur victoire aux dernières élections de 2018, les progressistes-conservateurs avaient annulé le programme qui avait été mis en place en 2015 par les libéraux, afin de répondre aux attentes des groupes reli- gieux et de parents qui considéraient que plusieurs notions enseignées n’étaient pas adaptées à l’âge des enfants. Le ministre de l’Éducation, Stephen Lecce, a expliqué dans un communiqué de presse émis récemment que le nouveau programme d’enseignement « permettra d’assurer la sécurité des élèves, tant dans la salle de classe qu’en dehors de celle-ci ». Dans ce communiqué, concernant les élèves de la première à la 8e année, le gouvernement Ford propose ce qui suit : abstinence, 7e année, inchangé par rapport à l’ancien programme; sexe oral et anal, 7e année, aucun changement; orientation sexuelle, 5e année, contrairement à l’ancien programme qui proposait la notion option- nelle en 3e année; identité de genre, 8e année et non pas en 6e comme le proposait Officials for the two English school districts in Prescott-Russell have no worries about the short time they have to add the new provincial guidelines on health, sex education, and physical edu- cation to the curriculum for elementary grade students. “The updated health and physical edu- cation curriculum was just released on Wednesday (August 21), so we have not yet reviewed it in depth,” stated Bill Loshaw, superintendent of schools for the Upper Canada District School Board (UCDSB), in an email interview. “We understand that it contains updated guidelines on important topics such as vaping, cannabis use, inclusi- vity and mental health, and we welcome that. sexuelle ne se limitent pas à l’anatomie et à la reproduction. Ils comprennent un large éventail de sujets et de concepts, parmi lesquels figure le consentement. (…) Les parents sont les principaux éducateurs de leurs enfants et sont les premiers modèles pour leurs enfants. Il est important que les écoles et les parents travaillent ensemble afin que leur foyer et leur école fournissent un cadre de soutien à l’éducation des jeunes. » Pour Denis Chartrand, vice-président et président par intérim au Conseil des écoles catholiques de l’Est ontarien (CSDCEO), le nouveau programme est très similaire à celui New curriculum okay with CDSBEO The Catholic District School Board of Eastern Ontario (CDSBEO) does not anti- cipate problems with having its teachers prepared for the new curriculum in time for the September 4 start of classes, and making sure it is acceptable to parents of students. “Both the current and previous health and physical education curriculum were taught in Catholic schools through a Catholic faith lens,” stated Todd Lalonde, CDSBEO chairman, in an email interview. “Ontario Catholic schools, including the CDSBEO, receive curriculum through the Fully Alive Program that was sponsored and developed through the Catholic Bishops of Ontario, in collaboration with Catholic school boards, educators and families. The CDSBEO will deliver the curriculum expectations, as established by the Ministry of Education, in Grades 1-8 Health and Physical Education, in a way that conveys, respects and models Catholic principles to our students, based on the Fully Alive Program.” Concussion and cannabis The Education Ministry will provide, through its website, a «parent-friendly resource” brochure on the new health cur- riculum, outlining what children will learn during each grade.

The Grades 4 to 8 sections will provide health safety information dealing with topics like concussion, vaping and cannabis use, cyber safety, healthy lifestyle choices, mental and social health, and sex education, inclu- ding information on what a healthy social relationship is. Todd Lalonde, chairman for the Catholic District School Board of Eastern Ontario, sees no problem for the district with the provincial government’s new curriculum for students in Grades 1 to 8 on health, physical education, and sex education. —supplied photo
