“This is my beloved Son ; hear him.” God was witnessing to the disciples, too, that Jesus was His Son. First He sent Moses and Elijah, the two Old Testament leaders, to recognize Jesus as the Son of God; and then He spoke to the disciples Himself. Now the disciples must know not only in their own hearts, but from God also, that Jesus was indeed the Christ, the Son o f God.

Jesus had gone back to heaven was that suddenly, with Jesus, the disciples saw Moses and Elijah talking to Him. The disciples were frightened. They ■didn’t know what to say. Finally Peter said, “ It is good for us to be here: and let us make three tabernacles; one for thee, and one for Moses, and one for Elijah.” A tabernacle was a little shelter made of leafy boughs. They would make these to honor the three. But even while Peter spoke, a cloud gathered around the three and the voice of God spoke from the midst saying,

patches of skin and hair upon the jagged rocks over which they slipped. W e did not dare to ride them, so walked down the treacherous trail on foot. It took us six hours to make the tiresome and dangerous descent. , There was not a drop of water to be had on the trail. All green things had been blasted by the withering heat. Nothing could be seen but barren, bleach ing rocks. Finally we arrived at the bot tom o f the mountain. There, to our joy, we saw a clear stream o f cool water. We threw ourselves upon its grassy banks and drank to our hearts’ content. That cold water was the greatest blessing of the whole day. Outline and Exposition I. T he P athway to G reatnesss (33-37) The desire for greatness is inherent in the human breast. Without it, there would be little if any progress in the world. The yearning to rise above one’s present lot, to attain to a better mode of living, to mount the hills o f our ideals, is to be commended because it speaks of aspirations as yet un fulfilled. Life would be a dead monotony, under which the race would descend to bru tality, without the desire for greatness. The disciples, talking together by the way, had been discussing who among them should be the greatest. • The trouble with these disciples was that they did not recognize what true greatness is. Their thought was merely to be above one another, to exercise lordship over others, and to be accounted great in the eyes of men because o f the position occu pied. It was a low ambition, and when the Lord asked them what they had been dis cussing,!-:, they were ashamed o f their thoughts and stood speechless before Him. Then He pointed out to them the only sure method o f achieving greatness : “If any man desire to be first, the same shall be last o f all, and servant of all.” The path to true greatness appears to go down, not up. It runs along the road called “humility” and brings one into fellowship with Him who is “meek and lowly in heart.” To place self last and others first, to serve instead of being served, and to count the other better than oneself, is to tread the pathway to true greatness. Man’s thought o f great ness and God’s thought o f it are two very different things. Our Lord gave the disciples a striking illustration of real greatness by setting a child in their midst, and then taking the child up in His arms. He taught that who soever would receive one such little child in the Lord’s name would be receiving the Lord •Himself. The greatest thing in the world is a child, and the reason for its greatness is seen in its spirit and disposi-

One day in the late spring, we were walk ing along the Mount o f Olives. The sun was shining brightly, and the heat was re flected from the glaring surface of the au tomobile road until it seemed to strike us with terrific force. After walking up hill and down dale for about two hours, our legs were weary, our faces blistered, and our lips and mouths parched. In the course o f our journey, we came to a cistern. Two women had been drawing water from it, and were just starting away with their water vessels upon their heads. They saw us looking longingly down into the cistern toward the water which we had no means of procuring. Sensing our desire, they im mediately poured out the water which they had drawn, let down their vessels for more, and offered them to us to drink. Just at that moment, there was no more welcome gift which they could have offered than that draught of cold water. Upon another occasion, we were making our way down a very rocky trail to the Dead Sea. The day was uncomfortably warm, and the difficulty o f the trail made our discomfort even greater. Time after time the horses slipped and fell. They left BLACKBOARD LESSON
