APR IL 3 “No man cared for my soul" (Psa. 142: 4). , - All about us there are people saying these words, and they really think we do not care. They walk the streets o f our cities; they live in our homes; they meet us in our places of business; they are mem bers of our circle o f friends; they know that we are Christians, and they are often thinking these words. It is strange that Christians should permit this fact to be so. It seems strange that a man who ac cepts what the Bible says about another man who is in this state of ignorance and fear should go on letting the man alone to be by himself and continue to say this. Yet the average man who sits in the pew and hears an impassioned appeal from the pulpit rarely thinks that it involves him in any special activity or responsibility. —J. W ilbur C hapman . Under God, you and I are what We are because somebody cared. S om e ’ human hand, with the pressure of divine love, touched ours. Some tender-utterance, born of evident sincerity, melted a stony heart.

as the story o f your life, Christian reader, is being put upon record, as to you also the glorious call and gracious purposes of God are made known, what shall be written down as the response of your life? —H ubert B rooke . MARCH 31 “H e delighteth in mercy" (Micah 7 :18). God is love in its highest degree. He is love rendered more than love. Love is not God, but God is love; He is full o f grace, He is the plentitude o f mercy—He delight eth in mercy. I believe that every flower in a garden, which is tended by a wise gardener, could tell of some particular care that the gar dener takes of it. He does for the dahlia what he does not for the sunflower; some what is wanted by the rose that is not required by the lily; and the geranium calls for an attention which is not given to the honeysuckle. Each flower wins from the gardener a special culture, He [the Divine Gardener] loves us bet ter than we love ourselves,: —C harles H addon S purgeon . APR IL 1 “ Where the Spirit o f the Lord is there is liberty" (2 Cor. 3:17). There is a bondage that arises from the thralldom of unhallowed desire; from the tyranny of selfish inclinations. This is a slavery against which we may battle, and battle in vain." Now, so long as this state of things continues, there can be no such thing as true spiritual liberty. “ Blessed are the pure in heart,” said our Lord. . . It is the special characteristic of the gospel that it begins with the center—the innermost part .of our being—“pure in heart." Now it is the office of the Spirit to set us free from the dominating and defiling power of sin within. It is not a mere negative clean sing that He communicates—the removal o f the defilement. It is positive purity. It is Christ as the Holy One that He reveals within. The spring of holiness is Christ, and He is revealed by the Spirit as dwell ing within the cleansed heart. This free dom-deliverance from unholy desires—is a privilege Christ has secured to us by His cross, but we are brought experimentally into the enjoyment of that privilege by His Spirit.—E van H. H opkins . APR IL 2 “ That they all may be one; as thou, Father, art in me, and I in thee" (John 17: 21 ). One of the joys of the morning is this reunion among the saints. During the night, they have been scattered;' in the morning they are gathered together. In the wilderness, they have been separated; but in the kingdom, they shall meet. During this age, they have been like the drops of the fitful shower; in the age to come, they shall be like the dew of Hermon, the dew that descended upon the mountains of Zion, one radiant company, alighting upon the holy hills, and bringing with them refresh ment to a weary earth. Then shall fully be answered the prayer o f the Lord, “That they all may be one; as thou, Father, art in me, and I in thee, that they also may be one in us” (John 17:21). —H oratius B onar . Oh, the joy o f that glad meeting With the saints who for us wait 1 What a blessed, happy greeting, Just inside the Eastern Gate!
