ARDNASHEE SCHOOL & COLLEGE, DERRY/LONDONDERRY
STRUCTURAL & CIVIL ENGINEER Ardnashee School & College is a carefully-engineered environment, designed to unlock potential, foster growth and provide a foundation for life-changing experiences. Albert Fry Associates worked closely with the Education Authority, school and the design team to set a new standard for SEN provision in Northern Ireland, with the school now used as a precedent for future projects. Challenges included a significant cut-and-fill exercise to be carried out across the site and provision of a hydrotherapy pool, sensory and immersive rooms. Classrooms had to be designed with versatility in mind to accommodate all students. The construction team maintained a strong focus on safety, quality, meeting deadlines throughout the 31-month project and delivering a school capable of providing an outstanding learning environment. The success of the project was attributed to close collaboration of the design team, adapting to evolving requirements and ensuring the ambitious budget and timeline were met. Established in 1987, Albert Fry Associates provides structural and civil engineering consultancy services from offices in Belfast and Dublin.
STREET FURNITURE ASF Engineering Limited, a specialist in fitting out public realm spaces, supplied external street furniture to Ardnashee School & College. The Ballymena-based business provided bollards, seating, cycle shelters, tree surrounds, door guards and litter bins for the school grounds. Melvin Smyth, Managing Director, said, “Everything we supplied was bespoke to the project, with our company designing and manufacturing all products at our Ballymena factory. “It was great to complete another successful project in the education sector in partnership with Woodvale Construction. It was a complex project, but with such a professional main contractor, it ran very smoothly.” Northern Ireland’s leading street furniture manufacturer, ASF Engineering was established in 1996 and manufactures a wide range of street furniture for many prestigious public realm schemes, park and retail developments throughout Northern Ireland. Customers include local councils, DfI Roads and Northern Ireland’s largest civil engineering and building contractors.
