A MESSAGE FROM HEAD OF YEAR 12
Year 12 students had an extremely busy week once again in and out of lessons. On Monday after school in the study base Lilit Ovakimian, a Waldegrave alumni, who was also joined by some of her colleagues at Samsung came in and spoke to the Year 12 students about how to get accepted into high profile programmes at large companies, in and beyond the tech sector. They also introduced and gave some information around apprenticeships, placements and also graduate programmes. Each speaker also discussed their department and gave a wider perspective on the range of opportu- nities and discussed the various projects they’ve been working on. They also talked about Samsung as a company and the many opportunities they have for students of all ages, including their ‘Solve for Tomorrow’ competition for anyone aged between 16-25. On Wednesday Waldegrave hosted the first of five talks from Deloitte & HSBC about careers and person- al finance. Year 12 learned what they will need to enter the workforce, from application tips to interview skills. Yesterday, all Sociology & Politics attended a talk with Lucy Owen after school. This was another talk about working in the public sector at different levels of government, the types of job available and the key skills that will help students when applying for jobs and to get ahead in this area. Finally today, as part of the students’ A-Level in Music, they attended a University Taster day trip, which took place at Royal Holloway University. Next week is the last one before half-term. Students need to make sure they speak to their teachers if they have any questions on any aspect of their courses and make sure they do some work over the break in preparation for the beginning of their end of Year 12 mocks straight after the Easter break.
MR STAVROU, HEAD OF YEAR 12
BOOK OF THE MONTH
‘Hag-seed’ - Margaret Atwood A marvellous retelling of the infamous Shakespearian play ‘The Tempest’. The story is weaved into the life of troubled, grieving Felix, theatre director, as he is exiled out of his town by his closest friends. He tries to avenge those who betrayed him and come to terms with the loss of his daughter as he directs ‘The Tempest’ with inmates as the actors as part of his new job. Atwood’s clear intelligence in Shakespeare’s work along with her unique, compelling writing style makes this book perfect for people who are interested yet perhaps intimidated by the complexity of Shakespeare.
