2021: Hitting the Reset Button

2020 is finally over! For many people, the New Year represents new beginnings. Right now, a lot of people are thinking about what they want to do this year, but they’re worried about setting their expectations too high. There are still a lot of questions about when things will get back on track. Will we be able to go back to our favorite restaurants? Will we be able to take a vacation or get out of town for a while? Will we be able to spend time with family and friends we haven’t seen for months or longer? It’s safe to say we’re all hoping 2021 is better than 2020, but it’s okay to temper your expectations. Because there are still many unknowns, it is hard to make solid plans — but it’s still important to look at the year ahead and make plans and set goals. Think about what you weren’t able to get done last year. If you had plans or goals that had to be put off, take a look at those plans again. You might not be able to jump into them right away, but if there is something you really want to do or accomplish, it’s good to refocus your energy on that thing. Or maybe you want to start fresh. I know a lot of people want a clean break from last year. They want to look ahead with optimism and to hit the reset button. But with such a volatile 2020, you might not know where to start. You might be wondering, “What if something else happens?” Or you might be concerned that the pandemic will keep on going, and you’ll miss out on more things.

expected) challenges, you can still adapt or refocus your efforts as the year progresses. It’s all about keeping the eye on the prize — even if it takes a little longer to get to that prize. It will be worth it in the end!

How Habit Tracking and Daily Resolutions Could Transform Your Life

Yearly resolutions are so last year … if they’re your only resolutions, that is.

Journal of Social Psychology asked people about a simple habit they wanted to form, like drinking water at lunch or taking a walk before dinner.

Having long-term goals isn’t a bad thing, but do you have a daily plan to reach them? The huge boost of motivation in January isn’t

They found that the average amount of time it took before the action became automatic was 66 days! Don’t be too hard on

always enough to sustain you all year long. That’s why there are major benefits to starting new healthy habits, whether you increase your weekly exercise time, eat healthier foods, or work on getting better or more sleep.

yourself if you miss a day, but know that sticking to a new habit is serious work, so starting small might help you out.

Another important aspect of forming new daily habits is rewarding yourself. Bad habits, like smoking, have an inherent reward. However, healthy habits can have rewards, too! Try consuming a bit of dark chocolate after a workout or treating yourself to a fresh beverage or relaxing to a podcast after tackling an important task. Find ways to reward yourself, and you’ll be more likely to stick to your new habit. Certain daily resolutions don’t have to be related to exercise or diet to majorly improve your life. For example, having a gratitude journal might boost your long-term happiness by 10% and improve your blood pressure. Don’t hesitate to improve your quality of life! Just start small, and you’ll be amazed by how far you’ll go.

Luckily, sticking with these habits might be as easy as making daily resolutions to complement your yearly goals.

B.J. Fogg, a Stanford University professor and author of “Tiny Habits: The Small Changes That Change Everything,” notes that tiny habits can make a new habit easy to implement into your daily ritual. For example, taking a short daily walk could lead to an exercise habit, or keeping an apple in your bag every day could encourage healthier snacking.

It’s important that you stick with it because habits take a long time to create. One study published by the European

“I was involved in an auto accident and I immediately called Herrman and Herrman to represent me. They are the best! Not only did they take on my case, but they also went above and beyond to help me out through the whole process and made sure I was taken care of. I was very much impressed by their professionalism, hard work, and dedication on my case. Without a doubt, I would highly recommend them to anyone!” –D.T. “The best of the best! Kathleen Galvan took care of me from the moment I called to the moment I found a resolution. Thank you Herrman and Herrman for having the best-of-the-best staff and for having a caring team!” –Darrian G. “Very friendly and professional. Mrs. Jackson and Janelle were very efficient and responsive to all of my concerns.” –Michelle R.

Pedestrian-Car Accidents Are More Common at Night: Here's Why

Vehicles strike about nine pedestrians every hour in the United States. On top of that, 12 pedestrians are killed every day. Of these pedestrian-auto collisions, many of them take place at night. If you’re a driver, it’s important to be aware of the dangers of pedestrian-involved accidents and to take extra caution when driving at night. Why is night so dangerous for pedestrian crashes? At night, a few conditions create a higher chance of a pedestrian- involved crash. One of the more apparent conditions is lowered visibility. The darkness creates a visual impairment when you are on the road, even with headlights on. Pedestrians are not always going to be in well-lit areas, and visibility out of your rearview and side mirrors is almost nonexistent. Additionally, at night, people have a slower reaction time than they do during the day, largely due to reduced visibility. The small difference in reaction time can be the difference between life and death for a pedestrian walking at night. Another reason night is so dangerous for these types of crashes is that, typically, nighttime is when individuals feel the most tired or fatigued. They have already had a long day or may even be on the road past their bedtime. Fatigue, in itself, is a dangerous

condition when you’re driving. Again, it can lower a driver’s reaction time and increase the possibility of an accident.

How can you avoid pedestrian-involved crashes? As a motorist, you can do a few things to avoid pedestrian-involved vehicle

crashes. First, if you are driving at night, drive a bit slower than you might during the day and always abide by the speed limit.

Additionally, make sure you yield to pedestrians on the side of the street and at all crosswalks and highly trafficked areas for walkers.

Another tip you should always abide by as a driver, regardless of whether it is day or night, is to never drink and drive or drive under the influence of any other substances. Together, these tips help make for safer nighttime driving conditions, which is ideal for everyone!
