My favourite book as a wee tad. Read it again for this. Anthony Ant is bored at home. Doesn’t see any reason to work all the time as all ants and antlets do. He leaves to see the world, meeting all sorts of bugs, some kind, many unkind. He learns that a bit of humility and politeness goes a long way. Nevertheless, he is lonely and usually hungry. His feet hurt and he lost his hat on the first day. The world is a field, a brook and marshy bits. Ant Ventures is a long nature poem full of wise insects, small mammals and ever-present danger, written like a thriller. There is a turning point in open-ended travels where the lump in the throat is too large, and you know, in your bones, that you want to go home. And if you are lucky you can.
