ABROAD as a paid language assistant INTEGRATED WORK PLACEMENT
Our Modern Languages programme allows you to study up to three languages, helping you to become part of a global community and opening doors to a wide range of careers. The principal languages offered as part of this degree programme are French, German and Spanish. These can be supplemented with modules from specialist vocational pathways with a focus on cultural studies, language pedagogy, translation and interpreting.

Studying the BA Modern Languages degree you can choose to study one, two or three languages (French/ German/Spanish). In addition, our pathways in cultural studies, translation and second language pedagogy offer maximum flexibility, allowing you to control the focus of your studies for the duration of your time with us. All students have access to our Conference Interpreting Suite, dedicated
• Modern European Film: Themes and Perspectives • Modern Languages: Introduction to Language Teaching Year 2 • Computer-Assisted Translation • Dialogue Interpreting • Intermediate and/or Advanced Language modules • Teaching Modern Foreign Languages to Young Learners Year 3 You will spend the third year abroad, working as a paid British Council language assistant or studying at a partner university. Some students also take paid work placements or work as volunteers on approved programmes. There are opportunities in Latin America for students of Spanish. In addition, language cafés take place outside formal class time and bring you together with exchange students who are native speakers ready to talk to you in the languages you are studying. French and Spanish can be studied at both advanced (post-A Level) and
introductory levels. Currently, German is only available at
introductory level. Our introductory pathways are suitable for students with little or no prior knowledge of the language.
