A MESSAGE FROM HEAD OF YEAR 9

At the end of last week pupils had a very informative assembly with Mr. Sharp about GCSE subject ‘Options’. He gave students a really clear overview as well as some top tips to help them navigate this process. To support the message to the students it was great to see so many of you at the Parents Information Evening on Tuesday. I hope you all found it helpful and are more confident with the process. This week we had a fabulous Year 8/9 win at the basketball tournament for schools in the Richmond area - congratulations to all the Year 9 players! Having been learning about opera in music, Mrs O’Brien had the opportunity to take a group of Year 9 to see ENO’s production of The Marriage of Figaro at the London Coliseum on Monday. The students had a great afternoon at the theatre and also enjoyed seeing the Southbank lit up on their way bank to Waterloo There was a fantastic Year 9 Careers Trip on Tuesday to the Careers Fest in Guildhall. It was delightful to hear from staff on the trip praise the enthusiasm and engagement of the pupils chosen to represent Waldegrave on this trip. As we near the end of this half-term our Year 9 leaderboard for Epraise is looking very close. Our top ten currently stand as: Anastasiia M, Ella R-J, Olivia M, Mia C, Poppy B, Dakshina A-P, Ivy M, Emilie D, Elsie F and Abi- gail B-L. What an amazing achievement - we are so proud of you. Please can you remind your child(ren) about the rules surrounding uniform, especially jewellery and leggings/ socks. All information has been shared with students as part of our tutor time schedule but you can also see the details here on our website. We greatly appreciate your support at home with this. Have a great weekend.

MRS MORTIMER, HEAD OF YEAR 9

BOOK OF THE MONTH

‘The Hunger Games’ by Suzanne Collins

In a dystopian future, the capital holds annual games where one boy and one girl (aged 12-18) from each of the 12 districts is chosen to fight to the death in an arena. The games are televised and shown across the country as a reminder to the labourers in the district that they are powerless against the capital. When Katniss’ sister has her name called during the annual reaping, Katniss volunteers to take her place as a daring act of sacrifice. The contrast between the glamour of the capital and the harsh conditions of the districts is an eye opening com- mentary on the dangers of political corruption and capitalism.
