Chair of the British Dental Association (BDA) Dr Crouch weighed in on key issues with the organisers highlighting pertinent oral health issues faced by local communities in the UK. “Public service dentistry is still needed, but its future depends on the government’s enthusiasm. If they continue to tweak the contract as the previous administration did, the long-term future of NHS dentistry is uncertain. The Nuffield report suggested that without significant investment, we may need to target NHS dentistry at those who cannot access private care, which is not a system I would want. I still believe in universal access, but hard decisions may be necessary depending on the country’s financial situation,” said Dr Crouch. When asked about his planned time at the Dentistry Show London stage, Dr Crouch said that the show will be a timely event to discuss recent events. “I am hopeful that by the time of the show, I will have a clearer direction. As I mentioned earlier, I have met with Wes Streeting [secretary of State for Health and Social Care of the United Kingdom] and have more meetings planned with Stephen Kinnock [Member of Parliament of the UK]. It is encouraging that they have appointed a dedicated minister for dentistry, showing commitment. There is always plenty happening in dentistry - regulation, consultation, workforce issues — so there will be no shortage of content. A lot is likely to unfold before the show.” DA
