TITLE Sustainability in Print Manufacturing
Current Industry Standard for Printing and Manufacturing
• Duggal is home to the Landa printer. This printer utilizes eco-friendly processes, using water-based inks, eliminating the need for printing plates and reducing ready time and waste. • The HP Indigo 12000 Digital Press is manufactured carbon neutral to offset carbon emissions and reduce environmental impact. • swissQprint is certified by the ISO standard 20690. Our swissQ printer is highly energy efficient, consuming 2.2 kWh of energy on average.
Although many graphic producers still use solvent inks, which chemically penetrate the substrate and release high quantities of atmospheric VOCs into the air, the print industry as a whole has begun to move towards the better practices which Duggal has been implementing for many years.
Duggal Sustainable Printing Technology
Duggal's Headquarters is the nation’s first LEED Gold Certified Production industrial facility, featuring solar panels, rainwater recycling systems, high-efficiency lighting fixtures, and living walls for natural ventilation. Duggal utilizes local power systems within the Brooklyn Navy Yard that feature virtually no transmission loss. Our energy provider features Siemens Combined Cycle Cogen technology, producing up to 50 percent more electricity, with less CO2 emissions than conventional plants.
As a Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) Certified Chain-of-Custody company, Duggal offers clients a number of official FSC certified products. These products are printed on the Landa and Indigo machines in Duggal’s West Hampton facility.
Eco-conscious Ink options
Since 2018, we have transitioned 90% of machine printers to LED cured GreenGuard certified printers.
• UV Printing: Unlike traditional solvent inks, UV ink sits on the surface of the substrate and is then cured as it leaves the printer. UV ink can be removed easier from the substrate, enabling it to be recycled efficiently and effectively, if possible. Our UV printers’ inks are also Volatile Organic Compound (VOC) free. • Aqueous Pigment Printing: Aqueous ink prints using similar technology and processes to traditional solvent-based printing practices. However, advantageously, water-based inks are VOC-free, require little ventilation, and use a spray head that is closer to the substrate to reduce excess ink use and waste. • Latex Printing: Latex ink is odorless and does not require specialized ventilation. The latex ink is compliant with many industry-leading certifications.
Machine Sustainability Metrics
• Durst P5 Tex uses 42% less energy, replacing an energy inefficient machine
• Durst P5 Dye Sub that is 25% more efficient and LED Curing
• MontiAntonio is 50% more efficient and includes more controls to reduce waste.
• New energy efficiency cutting machines reduce injury risk and production waste consumption

TITLE Sustainable Print and Visual Graphics
Sustainable Packaging Packaging decisions have the potential to drastically impact and reduce Duggal’s excess material and waste consumption.
Sustainable Printing Production Duggal uses 100% VOC-free ink and printing practices, reducing its contributions to environmental and carcinogenic pollutants.
Our Packsize Machine eliminates the need to purchase pre-made boxes and identifies the right-sized corrugated packaging for our products.
During the production printing and manufacturing processes, Duggal optimizes material use.
This process ultimately contributes to lower carbon emissions, fuel needs, and packing material. Using SFI certified cardboard, Packsize eliminates empty spaces and filler material in packages, making disposing and recycling the package easier for the client.
• An inventory of materials is kept to ensure all possible material is utilized for a number of different projects.
• Duggal is actively consolidating suppliers and materials to be the most efficient we can be in our production and waste.
This process ultimately contributes to lower carbon emissions, fuel needs, and packing material by using cardboard that is:
• Extra rigid boards, cutoffs, and scrap material are separated and stored for future test prints and proofing.
• Sustainable Forestry Initiative (SFI) certified.
• Any excess large quantities of substrate that is not used is donated to Material for the Arts (MFTA), Duggal’s partner which donates excess material to New York City’s creatives, educators, and artists.
• Manufactured in Pennsylvania, USA.
• Made of 61% recycled content.
• Biodegradable within 11 months, according to FTC guidelines.
Sustainable Lightbox Production Duggal’s silicone edge graphic (SEG) lightbox frame systems are 100% custom built, made of 30% recycled aluminum and printed of material made of recycled content. Every profile is designed to Duggal specifications for consistency, durability and material reduction, and built to last well beyond the average retail store lifespan.
The SEG Lightbox Frame can be 100% recycled through local metal recycling services.

TITLE Sustainable Solutions
End-of-Life
Materials are a crucial aspect at the core of Duggal’s operations. We want to be the front-runner in working with environmentally friendly materials, with the use of greener alternatives, supporting innovation and forming partnerships with organizations that can help us in this effort. We also focus on the circularity of our products, emphasizing reduction, reuse and recycling. We drew inspiration from resources such as the Natural Step, Cradle to Cradle and Life Cycle Analysis, which are sustainability frameworks to aid in environmentally friendly product development, printing processes as well as responsible end-of-life management.
Circularity and material life cycle are key ideas embedded within Duggal’s Sustainability Philosophy. As more responsible materials are created, we are equally responsible to identify how to ethically dispose of graphics so as not to contribute to landfill consumption practices. With this in mind, Duggal is actively researching and piloting end-of-life streams for various graphic materials. Below are various programs Duggal offers to clients.
