Duggal Sustainability 2024

TITLE Sustainability in Print Manufacturing

Current Industry Standard for Printing and Manufacturing

• Duggal is home to the Landa printer. This printer utilizes eco-friendly processes, using water-based inks, eliminating the need for printing plates and reducing ready time and waste. • The HP Indigo 12000 Digital Press is manufactured carbon neutral to offset carbon emissions and reduce environmental impact. • swissQprint is certified by the ISO standard 20690. Our swissQ printer is highly energy efficient, consuming 2.2 kWh of energy on average.

Although many graphic producers still use solvent inks, which chemically penetrate the substrate and release high quantities of atmospheric VOCs into the air, the print industry as a whole has begun to move towards the better practices which Duggal has been implementing for many years.

Duggal Sustainable Printing Technology

Duggal's Headquarters is the nation’s first LEED Gold Certified Production industrial facility, featuring solar panels, rainwater recycling systems, high-efficiency lighting fixtures, and living walls for natural ventilation. Duggal utilizes local power systems within the Brooklyn Navy Yard that feature virtually no transmission loss. Our energy provider features Siemens Combined Cycle Cogen technology, producing up to 50 percent more electricity, with less CO2 emissions than conventional plants.

As a Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) Certified Chain-of-Custody company, Duggal offers clients a number of official FSC certified products. These products are printed on the Landa and Indigo machines in Duggal’s West Hampton facility.

Eco-conscious Ink options

Since 2018, we have transitioned 90% of machine printers to LED cured GreenGuard certified printers.

• UV Printing: Unlike traditional solvent inks, UV ink sits on the surface of the substrate and is then cured as it leaves the printer. UV ink can be removed easier from the substrate, enabling it to be recycled efficiently and effectively, if possible. Our UV printers’ inks are also Volatile Organic Compound (VOC) free. • Aqueous Pigment Printing: Aqueous ink prints using similar technology and processes to traditional solvent-based printing practices. However, advantageously, water-based inks are VOC-free, require little ventilation, and use a spray head that is closer to the substrate to reduce excess ink use and waste. • Latex Printing: Latex ink is odorless and does not require specialized ventilation. The latex ink is compliant with many industry-leading certifications.
