RITAM SRBIJE / RHYTHM OF SERBIA

is among Serbia’s windiest places. The famous Banat koša- va wind often blows stronger here than in other parts of the country, which is why wind itself has

almost become a trademark of the city. These strong air currents are also the reason Vršac has a long tradition of avi- ation, including gliding. The city is also home to Vršac Airport, which is known for its pilot academy and sport aviation. Trainee pilots from Serbia and around the world have been trained here for decades. That’s why gliders that take ad- vantage of the region’s winds can of- ten be seen in the skies above the Vršac Mountains. Vršac is also a city of culture. It was the hometown of great Serbian paint- er Paja Jovanović (1859–1957), one of the most important representatives of realism in European academic art. Ed- ucated in Vienna, it was there that he gained an international reputation as a painter of historical compositions and portraits of members of the aristoc- racy. His works, including monumen- tal scenes from Balkan history and por- traits of notable personalities, brought him fame around Europe during the late 19 th and early 20 th centuries. De- spite spending most of his life between Vienna and other European metropolis- es, Jovanović always considered Vršac as his own city. The house where he was born has today been converted into a museum that preserves part of the art- ist’s legacy and serves as a reminder of the time when Vršac was an important regional centre of culture. Nightfall brings the city’s most ap- pealing rhythm: strolls through the city centre and conversations over glasses of wine. It is precisely in such moments that Vršac reveals its true nature as a city that makes time feel like it’s mov- ing slower... For visitors wanting to get to know a different side of Serbia, Vršac is almost the perfect destination: small enough to be experienced intimately, yet rich enough to remain long remem- bered.

MONASTERY IN THE TRANQUILLITY OF A VINEYARD

Just a few kilometres from Vršac, on the slopes of Vršac Mountains, stands Mesić Monastery – one of the oldest Orthodox monasteries in this part of Banat. It is said to have been established in the 11 th century, and its church is today dedicated to St. John the Baptist. The monastery complex is sur- rounded by woods and vineyards, providing it with almost monastic isolation and seren- ity that attracts both believers and travel- lers. It represents one of the most beautiful spiritual and cultural sites in southern Ba- nat today - perfect for short excursions from Vršac and breaks in nature.

Vršačka kula, simbol ne samo grada već i cele okoline, sazidana je 1439. godine, a od celog utvrđenja najočuvanija je Donžon kula, visine 20 m, koja je danas u potpunosti restaurirana Vršac Castle, formerly Vršac Tower, isn’t only a symbol of the city, but also of the entire surrounding area. Built in 1439, the most well-preserved section of the entire fortification is Donjon Tower, which rises to a height of 20 metres and has today been fully restored
