Biopics as a Hollywood trend Biopics have experienced a real re- naissance in Hollywood over the last ten years. Audiences have shown strong interest in stories about historical fig- ures, musicians, scientists and public figures whose lives are dramatic narra- tives in their own right. In that sense, Michael isn’t just the latest biopic project, but rather a poten- tial test for the entire genre of musical biopics that has dominated cinema rep- ertoires over recent years. Directed by Antoine Fuqua, known for Training Day and The Equalizer, the screenplay was written by John Logan (Gladiator, The Last Samurai, The Avia- tor), one of Hollywood’s most respect- ed screenwriters. Michael’s real-life nephew, Jaafar Jackson, has been en- trusted with the lead role, marking a decision that attracted public atten- tion from the outset. The producers stressed that his physical resemblance and stage energy proved crucial in the casting process. Created in collaboration with the Jackson Estate, the film’s production
idea of the pop album as a multimedia cultural event. Occupying a special place in the history of music is the album Thriller, which remains the best-selling album of all time, with around 70 mil- lion copies sold worldwide. And it didn’t only achieve unprecedented commercial success – it also marked a new era of music production, marketing and visual presentation in pop music. In total, Michael Jackson is estimat- ed to have sold more than 500 million copies of his albums during his career, making him one of the most successful music artists in history. His world tours – the Bad World Tour, Dangerous World Tour and HIS- tory World Tour – attracted tens of mil- lions of spectators and set new stand- ards as concert spectacles. Jackson’s performances combined choreography, scenography and technological innova- tion in a way that would later become the model for modern pop tours. In this context, Jackson wasn’t just a singer. He was a media and cultural phenom- enon that defined the era of MTV and visual pop culture.
team were granted access to original music and archives. With a budget esti- mated at more than 150 million dollars, a large part of the film’s production fo- cused on the reconstruction of legend- ary concert performances and music videos. However, the route to realising this project wasn’t easy to navigate. The film’s development took years to com- plete, with the production having gone through several stages of adjusting the screenplay and the story’s scope, pri- marily because of the extremely com- plex and extensive career this film is trying to portray. Legacy that continues into the 21 st century Despite having reached the pin- nacle of his career during the 1980s and ‘90s, Michael Jackson contin- ues to have an extremely strong influ- ence over contemporary pop culture. His last major hit was 2001’s You Rock My World, and he died shortly before he was scheduled to launch his This Is It concert residency of 50 concerts at London’s O2 Arena. Jackson’s legend- ary stage performances, choreogra- phy and visual identity served as inspi- ration for an entire generation of pop artists. And many of today’s artists – from pop stars to R&B and hip-hop artists – continue to cite him as one of their main role models. In this era of streaming platforms, Jackson’s mu- sic is listened to billions of times each year, showing that his cultural influ- ence isn’t limited to a single era. His career wasn’t just a series of hits and spectacular performances, but rather a phenomenon that redefined the way popular music communicates with audiences worldwide. This is pre- cisely why the film Michael is expected to extend beyond the standard biopic framework to become a kind of cultur- al event, a cinematic attempt to capture the energy of an era in which pop music became a global language. If it succeeds in capturing just a small part of that artistic and histori- cal significance, this film could confirm what’s been said about Michael Jackson for decades: that he was an artist whose influence isn’t only part of music histo- ry, but the very definition of contempo- rary culture.
