New York’s Metropolitan Mu- seum of Art, often referred to sim- ply as “the Met”, is one of the world’s most important compre- hensive art museums. With col- lections encompassing art from all over the world and spanning more than five millennia, the Met is a meeting place for civilisations, eras, and trends—from ancient Egypt to contemporary artistic ex- ploration. the first comprehensive interna- tional retrospective dedicated to Raphael (Raffaello Sanzio, 1483– 1520) in the United States. It runs until 28 th June and brings togeth- er over 200 works by this Italian Renaissance master — from paint- ings and drawings to tapestries and Raphael: Sublime Poetry “Raphael: Sublime Poetry” is decorative arts — sourced from collections around the world. Raphael is an artist whose rep-
utation has remained synonymous over the centuries with harmony, clar- ity and the ideal balance between form and expression. Despite his life be- ing cut short — he died at the age of just 37 — his oeuvre left a deep mark that shaped Renaissance aes- thetics and inspired generations of painters. This exhibition traces his artis- tic journey from his days in Urbino, through his formative years in Flor- ence (where he shared a studio with Leonardo da Vinci and was a con- temporary of Michelangelo), to his most fruitful period in Rome, where he created works that remain refer- ence points of art history to this day. Why it matters This major overview of Rapha- el’s work provides a unique opportu- nity to see him not only through his best-known works, but also through his lesser-known preparatory draw- ings and lesser-exhibited tapestries.
