bewildered in front of the paintings of Monet or Renoir, scoffing at the “haphaz- ard” brush strokes. Degas practically took over the organisation, transferring the paintings and supervising their installa- tion, while Monet was so anxious about how his work would be received that he almost abandoned plans to exhibit. One visitor reportedly commented: “If this is art, I’m ready to be a pirate!”. The Paris of the time was itself un- dergoing major changes. New boulevards, parks and railway lines had changed the daily life of the city, and it was precisely this modern rhythm of city life that the Impressionists turned into the themes of their paintings. Renoir painted dancing gardens and cafes, Degas depicted bal- let scenes, while Monet obsessively fol- lowed the light above the river and in landscapes. The group organised a total of eight

joint exhibitions between 1874 and 1886. Styles developed and diverged over the years, but the basic premise remained the same: capture the passing moment and the light of day, what is “underway”, rather than being perfectly composed in the studio. The irony of history is plain. What looked like the experiment of a small group of rebellious painters back in April

1874 is today one of the most popular movements of the art world. Impression- ist works are among the most sought-af- ter pieces in museums and among the most beloved paintings among the pub- lic. And it all started one spring day in Paris, when a few artists decided to take painting out of the studio – and right in- to the light of day and the joyful colours of April.
