were in danger of forgetting about His death on the cross. To remind them, He gave them what we call “the Lord’s Supper.” In order that bread may be made, the wheat has to be groupd In the mill and baked In the oven. This gives us a very beautiful picture of the suffer ings and death of Christ on the cross.' The grapes had to be picked and crushed before this grape juice could be prepared. This grape juice speaks of the blood of Christ which cleanses from all sin. Let us as Christians be Luke 26: IS And Pilate, when he had called together the chief priests and the rulers and the people, 14 Said nnto them. Ye have brought this man nnto me, as one that perverteth the people; and hehbld, I, having examined him before you, have found no fault In this man touching those things whereof ye accuse him : 15 N o, nor yet H erod: for I sent you to him ; and, lo, nothing worthy of death Is done unto him. 16 I will therefore chastise him, and re lease him. 17 (For of necessity he must release one unto them at the feast.) 18 And they cried out all at once, saying, Aw ay with this man, and release unto ns B arabbas: 19 (W ho for a certain sedition made in the elty, and for murder, was cast Into prison.) 20 Pilate Jhereforfe, willing to release Jesus,' spake again to them. 21 But they ^rledj saying, Crucify him, crucify him. 22 And he said nnto them the third time, Why,* what evil hath he done! I have found no cause of death In him ; I will therefore chastise him, and let him go. 2S And they were Instant with loud voices, requiring that he might be crucifiedt and the voices of them and of the chief priests prevailed. 24 And Pilate gave sentence that it should be as they required. 25 And lie released unto them him that for sedition and murder was east into prison, whom they had desired; bnt he delivered Jesus to their will. 32 And there were also two others, male factors. led with him to be put to death. S8 And when they were come to the place, which is called Calvary** there they crucified him, and the malefactors,, one on the right hand, and the Other on the left. 34 Then said Jesns, Father, forgive them ; for they know not what they do. Outline and Exposition I. T he P olicy of P ilate (13-25) ILATE was a man who- tried to carry water on both shoulders; he proposed to try to satisfy both the enemies and the friends of Jesus by adopting a “middle of the road” plan. He found that this course is im possible, and he finally was forced to throw in his lot ■with the enemies. He schemed to •make Herod decide the question, but Herod proved to be too cunning for him, and sent Jesus back to Pilate with the problem unsolved. Then Pilate offered to chastise Jesus, hoping that would satisfy those who

very careful to remember the death of Christ as we take the Lord’s Supper.

MARCH 23, 1941 JESUS CONDEMNED AND CRUCIFIED L uke 22:39 to 23:56

were insisting upon His death. He knew that in Jesus there was nothing worthy of beating or of death, but he thought he could shirk his responsi bility in the matter. Finally, Jie proposed that Barabbas, who was in prison for rebellion and for murder, should be crucified and Jesuls released. But he found to his dismay that the desire of the people was not merely to satisfy a lust for blood, but they demanded the death of a certain one, Jesus. Seeing he could not prevail, Pilate allowed his sense of justice to be cast aside, and he un righteously delivered Jesus to the will of the people. His very prudence, upon which he relied, became his downfall, and forced him into the ranks of those who will one day stand before Jesus Christ and answer for their ungodly deeds (cf. Jude 15). n . T he P reference of the P eople (13-25) The same verses that cover Pilate’s record cover also the record of the crowd who demanded and secured the crucifixion of Jesus. The purpose of the record of Barab bas is sometimes overlooked. During His ministry, our Lord had told the people that they were “of yout father the devil, and the lusts [desires} of your father ye will do.” That father was a murderer from the beginning (cf. John 8:38-45). Underneath this record of Barabbas lies the fact of the potehey of the devil with his own. Barabbas was a rebel whose sedition had brought him to prison, and he was also a murderer. The devil was a rebel and a murderer from the beginning, B LACKBOARD LESSON
