love, will do for a child what another could not be hired to do. If you boys and girls really love your mother, you will try to help her and will do things that will please her. True love does Something for the one who is loved. •We read in John 3:16: “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have ever lasting life.” God loved and gave His Son to die on the cross. We will open this letter “L” to see what is on the inside. It is a red cross, speaking of the death of Christ to save those whom He loved. Luke 84:86 And ks they thus spake, .lesus himself stood in the midst of them, and saith niito them, Peace he unto you. 87 But they were terrified and affrighted, and supposed that they had seen a spirit. $8 And he said unto them, W hy are ye troubled! find why do thoughts arise in your hearts! 89 Behold m> hands and my feet, that it is 1 m yself: handle me, and see; for a spirit hath not flesh and hones, as ye see me hare. 46 And when he had thus spoken, he showed them his hands and his feet. 41 And while they yet believed not for joy, and wondered, he said nnto them, H are ye here any m eat! 42 And they gave him a piece of a broiled fish, and of a honeycomb. 43 And he took it, and did eat before them. 44 And he said nnto them, These are the words which 1 spake nnto you, while' i was yet with you, that all things must be fulfilled, which were written in the law of Moses, and in the prophets, and in the psalm s, concerning me. 48 Then opened he their understanding, that they might understand the Scriptures, 46 And said nnto them. Thus it is written, and thus It behooved Christ' to suffer, and to rise from the dead the third day: ^47 And that repentance and remission of sins Should be preached in his name among all nations, beginning at Jerusalem. 48 And ye are witnesses of these things. 49 And, behold, I send the promise of my Father upon you : but tarry ye in the city of Jerusalem, until ye be endued with power from on high. 56 And he led them out as far as to Bethany, and he lifted np his hands, and blessed them. 5V And it came to pass, while he blessed them, he was parted from them, and carried up into heaven. . 52 And they worshipped him, and re turned to Jerusalem with great joy: 58 And were continually in the temple, praising and blessing Cod. Amen. tr O L M N T E X T : “ Behold, I send the promise of my Father upon yon” (Lk. 24:49). D E V O T IO N A L R E A D IN G : Isa. 52:7-12.. Outline and Exposition I. T he P roof for D isciples (36-44) HE DEATH of Christ filled His disciples with dismay. They fled from the scene with fear and dread. They had hoped He was the One of whom the prophets had written, but now He had been slain, and His body lay in the tomb. Not knowing what to do, and being afraid of the Jews, the Lord's followers gathered together in

the gloom of theii* disappointment. Then, suddenly, Jesus Himself stood in their midst. In their unbelief, they thought they saw an impalpable spirit. But He gave them “many infallible proofs” (Acts 1:3) that He had come back from the dead, and was in the flesh. He showed His hands and feet of living *flesh and said, “Handle me, and see; for a spirit hath not flesh and bones, as ye see me have.” It is blas phemy to suggest that in this appear ance of our Lord to His own there was no living body, but merely a hallucina tion or an apparition. - To further convince these doubting disciples of the corporality of His body, Jesus took “a piece of a broiled fish, and of a honeycomb . . . and did eat before them.” He was to return pres ently to the Father’s house, but before doing so, He would have their minds fully' assured concerning His bodily resurrection. This fact was to be the foundation of all their preaching. II. T he P reparation of the D isciples (44-46) Jesus reminded the disciples that He had told them before that He would rise, from the dead, and told them this because “all things must be fulfilled, which were written in the law of Moses, and in the prophets, and in the psalms,” concerning Himself. He would have them know that the Scriptures, that is, the whole of the Old Testament, had spoken of His death and also of His literaj resurrection from among the dead; Then He opened their understanding concerning what was written, showing that “it behooved Christ to suffer, and to rise from the dead the third day.” Before the commission to the disciples can be accepted, much less fulfilled, there must be the assurance that the Old Testament (and indeed the whole body of Scripture) is inspired by God. Then there must be an opening of the mind for understanding the Scriptures.
