for Him, for “power belongeth unto God” (Psa. 62:11). But when the Holy Spirit who indwells every true believer in Christ has full sway in a yielded, Clean life, the very power of God Him self is working! Let us consider what the Word of God reveals concerning the person and work of the Holy Spirit. For Those Who Have Topics I. THE HOLY SPIRIT AS "COM FORTER” : The Christian’s Advo cate (John 14:15-17). 1. C. I. Scofield’s note on this pas sage in the Scofield Reference Bible gives the following light: “Gr. Para- kletos, ‘one called alongside to help’ Translated ‘advocate,’ 1 John 2:1. Christ is the believer’s Paraclete with the Father when he sins; the Holy Spirit is the believer’s indwelling Paraclete to help his ignorance and infirmity, and to make intercession (Rom. 8:26, 27).” 2. Think of the value of the plea of an absolutely righteous representative of a client, if made before an absolutely righteous judge, who had provided for that very plea. n . THE HOLY SPIRIT AS TEACHER (John 16:13, 14). 1. In following human teachers, however scholarly, students must al ways allow for the fallibility of human nature and human wisdom. But the Holy Spirit is the “ Spirit of truth” (John 14:17; 16:13), and He is a safe Guide. 2. Discuss what factors limit the learning process: The intensity of the pupil’s own will to learn, his obedience to the enlightenment he receives, his care in following instructions for learn ing, and his spending of much time with the textbooks of the course. Compare the Bible as the Textbook for knowing God. Consider also the stimulation and zest of fellowship with others engaged in the learning process, as lessons learn ed are discussed with other “pupils” (Heb. 10:24, 25). TO. THE SPIRIT OF ADOPTION (Rom. 8:14-17). 1. This sonship of Christians is based upon receiving Christ, the act of faith which results in the new birth into the family of God (John 1:12, R.V., “power,” translated “the right” ; 3:3-7; Gal. 3:26). 2. The sense of sonship with God has a practical effect on the Christian’s life: (a) The Christian has confidence (2 Tim. 1:7; Eph. 3:11, 12), and (b) He is stirred to live in a manner pleas ing to God (1 John 3:1-3). of .the new covenant, all that dwells fn Christ for men.” * II. GRACE IN ACTION (2 Cor. 8:9). • 1. It was divine grace that caused the Son of God to leave the very pres ence of His Father to take the steps described in Philippians 2:5-8. 2. It is grace that operates at every step of our redemption. For example, it is by grace that we are brought to the point of believing. Christ (Acts 11:23; cf. v. 21 and references under first point of “Introduction” ) ; that we are* “justified,” i.e., looked upon as righteous in God’s sight (Tit, 3:7); that we "grow” in the Christian life (Acts 20:32; 2 Pet. 3:18; Tit. 2:11-14), and that we have access to the Throne of God in prayer (Heb. 4:16). TO. GRACE FOR SERVICE (2 Tim. 2:1-3). 1. It is by God’s grace, His unmer ited favor, that Christian service is made possible (1 Cor. 3:10, 11; 15:10; Eph. 4:7; Acts 14:26). 2. The Christian, as a witness for his' Saviour, is a steward of God’s grace, transmitting- it to others (Eph. 4:29; 1 Pet. 4:10). For the Leader A mother sought the pardon of her son from the first Napoleon. The em peror said it was the youth’s second Offense, and justice demanded his death. “I don’t ask for justice,” demanded thè mother. “I plead for mercy.” “But,” said the emperor, "he does not deserve mercy.” "Sire,” cried the mother, “it, would not be mercy if he deserved it, and mercy is all I ask for.” “Well, then,” said the emperor, “I will have mercy.” , And her son was saved. —Good Company. MARCH 16, 1941 THE COMMUNION OF THE HOLY SPIRIT ! J ohn 14:15-17; 16:13, 14; R omans 8:14-17 Introduction "The love of God the Father, the grace of Jesus Christ the Son, and the communion of the Holy Spirit"—this is the weekly benediction pronounced in multitudes of churches around the world. Today’s lesson deals with the most commonly ignored portion of this triune blessing—“the communion of the Holy Spirit.” Is it any wonder that there is a noticeable lack of power in the lives of Christians when so many are in igno rance concerning the One who is “the spirit, . . . of power” ? The Christian is not to beg God for power for service
