Police Program Spotlights

CHILD ABDUCTION TEAM CERTIFICATION The purpose of a Child Abduction Response Team (CART) is to quickly and effectively recover a child that has been abducted or is missing under suspicious circumstances by utilizing resources and a team of individuals with specialized training and experience related to child abductions. The swift deployment of pre-identified resources and personnel is the primary CART objective as well as a key factor in the safe recovery of a missing or abducted child. CART is organized and managed by the Allegheny County Police Department and consists of local, federal, and volunteer agencies. On April 12 and 13, 2022, the Allegheny County Police CART team went through a certification process with the Department of Justice. The certification consisted of policy review, interviews with key personnel and a full-scale mock scenario which showed the team’s response and actions during a child abduction investigation. The Allegheny County Police CART was notified on September 6, 2022, that the Department of Justice certified them as a nationally recognized Child Abduction Response Team. The Allegheny County Police Team is the second in the state of Pennsylvania to be certified.

UNMANNED AIRCRAFT SYSTEMS

In 2022, the Allegheny County Police expanded its current Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) program with the purchase of a state-of-the-art aircraft. This aircraft’s camera system provides zoom capabilities as well as thermal imaging. The aircraft is also equipped with a range finder, speaker, and spotlight. With the addition of this new aircraft, County Police will be able to provide better assistance to the local municipalities when a UAS could be utilized.
