Allegheny County 2022 Highlights Report

FAMILY LAW CENTER RENOVATIONS In the Family Law Center, Facilities Management trades employees completed renovations to the 1st and 2nd floors which include a family waiting room with a children’s play area, and two new consultation rooms, as well an exam room, staff areas and a sensory room for the UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh space within the building. The sensory room is the highlight of these improvements and is designed to provide calm, focus and comfort to children with sensory processing sensitivities, often those with autism spectrum disorder. This room features an environment that provides an immersive sensory experience with movement, lighting, tactile objects, therapeutic scents, music and more, not just for tackling behavioral problems, but also for improving information retention, engagement and interaction, balance, movement, and spatial orientation. REHABILITATION OF THE NEVIN SHELTER, SOUTH PARK Nevin Shelter is one of the oldest stone shelters in South Park, and was designed by Swiss landscape architect, Paul Riis, also the first director of Allegheny County Parks. Built in 1931, and located along Corrigan Drive, this stone structure is a true historic gem. Facilities Management carpenters and trowel trades staff were able to rebuild the beautiful stone hearth, repoint the chimney and installed a new roof and new picnic tables. It is once again a featured spot for visitors to South Park.
