The 11,000 locks that were removed from the Roberto Clemente Bridge handrails during the project will be donated to the Industrial Arts Workshop of Hazelwood. The nonprofit organization teaches students of all ages about sculpture creation and artistic literacy, including the fundamentals of welding, design, engineering principles, and safety standards. Also, as part of the project, enhanced lighting is being installed on the Roberto Clemente, Andy Warhol, and Rachel Carson bridges, otherwise known as the Sister Bridges. The installation of 1,080 lighting fixtures with 601,440 color LED lights (360 fixtures and 200,480 lights on each bridge) will highlight the spans’ architectural and historical significance. The lights will be controlled remotely using Digital Multiplex (DMX) and wireless technology as well as fiber optic and ethernet cabling.
CHAINSAW TRAINING COURSE Public Works’ Safety Division, with help from consultant Forest Applications Training, provided an in- depth, hands-on training course to county employees from various departments. Those employees learned about felling (cutting and dropping a standing tree in the place you want it), limbing (removal of the branches from either a standing or downed tree) and bucking (cutting a downed tree into appropriate lengths). The training was an integral part of improving safety and operations efficiency. Public Works crews are constantly maintaining the trees along county-owned roads and respond quickly when wind, heavy snow, or ice causes trees to fall or lean onto a roadway. Getting those trees removed is vital to allowing emergency services and the traveling public to reach their destinations safely.
