NEW EXCAVATOR Public Works purchased a new Volvo EWR170E excavator, increasing the ability of its maintenance crews to tackle tough jobs. The excavator’s small cabin makes for efficient and safe work in confined spaces. It also is equipped with a very beneficial tilt rotator, which allows for various attachments to be tilted 50 degrees in any direction and continuously rotated 360 degrees. For example, when using a brush cutting attachment, Public Works can now access and remove problematic vegetation that it couldn’t reach using its brush cutting tractors. The excavator travels on wheels instead of tracks,
which lets crews move much faster between jobs, and its rubber tires are less likely to damage roads or parking lots. It’s also more fuel efficient than typical excavators. It features auto idle and auto engine shut down functions, an ECO mode, and complies with the EPA’s latest emission standards. NEW HEAVY EQUIPMENT MANAGEMENT SOFTWARE
Public Works began using new management software to maintain its heavy equipment fleet more efficiently. The HCSS Equipment360 software provides the department’s Heavy Equipment Division Supervisor and its mechanics with alerts related to preventative maintenance schedules and needed repairs, and work orders can now be quickly sent remotely to the mechanics.
The software also allows for the fleet’s maintenance history, associated photos, and work orders to be
stored in one convenient and easily searchable location. That has saved the department a considerable amount of time and allowed it to stay ahead of the fleet’s maintenance needs before problems occur.
