M You don’t seem the kind to make friends easily.
John is getting to his feet, angrily. JOHN Are we done? M You tell me. John gets to his feet. Starts heading to the door. M I imagine people have already
warned you to stay away from him. But I can see from your left hand, that isn’t going to happen.
That brings John up short. He turns. JOHN My what? M Show me.
Bewildered, John holds it up. M is approaching now. He squints closer John’s hand. Takes the wrist, revolves his hand slightly. It’s not in any way intimate - a forensic examination. M Remarkable. JOHN What is? M Most people blunder round this
city, and all they see are streets and shops and cars. But when you walk with Sherlock Holmes, you see the battlefield. You’ve seen it already, haven’t you? JOHN What’s wrong with my hand? M (Consulting his notebook) You have an intermittent tremor in your left hand. Your therapist thinks it’s post-traumatic-stress disorder. She thinks you’re haunted by memories of your military service. JOHN Who the hell are you, and how do you know that??
