Suggested Strategy: Whether this person has just started in the professional world, or has been in it for some time, there is not a standardized and taught definition for the word professionalism. Set a definition for the professionalism that you are looking for from this person, so that both parties are on the same page regarding what is expected.
Suggested Questions:
Î Define & Coach: When I present you with the word professionalism, what definition comes to mind as it relates to your position? Î Self-Actualized Question: What specific actions will you take going forward to exhibit the definition of professionalism that we just discussed?
Suggested Activities:
Î Whiteboard Coaching: On the left side of a whiteboard, write down how this person would currently describe themselves professionally. On the right side of the board, write down how this person would ideally like to be described professionally. Then, erase the left side of the board and write down the actions that this person is willing to take to reach the description on the right side of the board. Î GOAL-Based Coaching: What does this person hope to become Great at in their career? What Opportunities might be presented to this person by becoming great? What Actions must this person take in order to bring those opportunities within reach? What will this person Love about reaching their goals? How will practicing professionalism at work help put this person on the path toward success in reaching their goals?
