Effective Communication with Peers

Suggested Strategy: Daily communication can have big implementation in everyday tasks, as well as in the big picture of the employee’s goals. Focus on the effect that conversation can have in their position.

Suggested Questions:

Î Third-Party Question: If one of your peers were to describe your communication abilities, what do you think they might say? How might their opinion affect your work relationship with them? Î Self-Actualized Question: How can daily conversations with peers help you reach your goals and assist you in your daily tasks? Why are these conversations important to your development in your position?

Suggested Activities:

Î Role Play: Practice a scenario where you are a peer and the employee is him/herself and you engage in a conversation about a project you are working on together. Note the employee’s tone, body language, and ability to effectively hold the conversation. Ask the employee after role play two things they think they did well, and two things they think they could have improved. Î Whiteboard Coaching: On the left side of the whiteboard, write down how the employee thinks their peers would currently describe their communication skills. Now on the right side of the board, write down how the employee would ideally like to be described when it comes to their communication. Erase the left side of the board and write down actions that you and the employee can take together to help them reach the description on the ideal side of the board.
