Being Comfortable with Saying “I Don’t Know”

Suggested Strategy: Bring awareness to the individual’s current strategy for responding when they are unsure of an answer using a Teach Me strategy, as well as practice strategies with the individual to utilize in the future.

Suggested Questions:

Î Teach Me + The Sword: Just so that I don’t make any assumptions because that would be unfair to you, could you walk me through your current strategy for addressing a question that you may be unsure of the answer to? Î Rating Question: On a scale of one to six, with six representing that you are completely comfortable with not having the answer, and one representing that you are entirely uncomfortable with not having the answer, where would you rate yourself and why? Î Success Imperative: What actions do you think you must take to become comfortable not always having the answer, and how might having a strategy in place help your success, even when you don’t know the answer?

Suggested Activities:

Î Whiteboard Coaching: On the left side of a whiteboard, write down the individual’s current strategy for addressing a question that they may not know the answer to. On the right side of the board, brainstorm together some new strategies that the individual can have in their arsenal as they approach these situations in the future and compare each side to discuss the potential outcomes for each side of the board, and how each new strategy can contribute to future success.
