Î Role Play: Have some tougher practice situations prepared that you can practice with your coaching target. Using their newly attained strategies, have the individual practice addressing those situations without breaking out of roles until after the conversation has ended. Discuss any feedback you may have for them related to what they’ve done well, as well as anything you think they may still want to work on.
Suggested Learning Projects:
Î Peer-to-Peer Coaching: Assign your coaching target to meet with a new peer each week to practice and discuss strategies for addressing questions that they may not know the answer to. What strategies do their peers have in place? Do they coincide with any of the new strategies you discussed in your coaching session? Discuss any takeaways from the individual’s meetings with their peers at your next coaching session. Î Journal-Based Coaching: Assign your coaching target to keep a journal as they become more comfortable with saying that they do not know the answer to a question. What do they find works best for them and what do they still struggle with?
Supplemental Coaching Strategies:
Î Non-Verbal Coaching: As the individual becomes more comfortable with saying “I don’t know”, send a hand-written note home with them, sharing your specific observations made of actions taken by the individual to become more comfortable. Share with them how their actions are appreciated and will be beneficial to the individual and to the team.
