Building Confidence Through Practice

Suggested Strategy: Using Role Play, facilitate practice situations where the employee has an opportunity to practice improving the area that you would like to coach them to. Having confidence is the ability to practice the skill with confidence and conviction, and by giving the individual a space to practice, they will feel more comfortable in receiving coaching.

Suggested Questions:

Î Rating Question: On a scale of one to six, with six representing a complete confidence in executing (the skill that you are coaching them to) and one representing that you have no confidence in that skill at all, where would you rate yourself and why? Î Self-Actualized Question: What actions do you think we could take together to help you reach a six?

Suggested Activities:

Î Whiteboard Coaching: On the left side of a whiteboard, write down how your coaching target would currently describe their confidence in the skill you would like to coach them to. On the right side of the board, ask them to describe what complete confidence in that skill would ideally look like. Erase the left side of the board and write down the actions that your coaching target is willing to take to build their confidence in that skill. Î Role Play: Practice! Facilitate practice sessions to give the individual an opportunity to apply their skills in a real conversation or transaction. After the practice session, ask the individual to give themselves feedback on what they feel they did well, what they think they could still improve and how they plan to go about improving those things.
