Coaching Someone with More Experience
Suggested Strategy: Approach the conversation as though the individual you are coaching can teach you some things that you may not know about their position or about the company. This will help them let their guard down as you share some insight with them.
Suggested Questions:
Î Teach Me: Your experience with the company is so valued, and I wonder if you might have knowledge (related to whatever it is you would like to coach them to improve) that you could teach me that I may not know. Î This opens the door to having the individual think about what they truly know about that subject and the information they may be potentially missing. Î Self-Actualized Question: How do you think you might be able to share your knowledge with others while also continuing to build on the success you have found in your position?
Suggested Activities:
Î Whiteboard Coaching: On the left side of a whiteboard, write down everything that the individual was able to teach you from the beginning of the coaching session, and any other knowledge they may have. On the right side of the board, discuss and write down things that the individual did not talk about or that they may not know about. Then, brainstorm together a strategy for incorporating the new information they may have just learned into their workday. Î Perception vs. Intent: Have a conversation with the individual about how they would like to be perceived by their peers as someone that has been with the company for an extended period of time. What kind of legacy do they dream of leaving behind as they near their retirement if they are nearing that stage of their career?
