of the board, ask the team to describe how they currently talk about conflict. To finish the activity, erase the left side of the board and ask the team specifically what steps need to take place to reach the actions and behaviors listed on the right side of the board.

Suggested Learning Projects:

Î Observational Coaching: Have the team leave your coaching session with the goal of observing the rest of the team and their ability to talk about conflict constructively. Have them rate their teammates by having each employee write down what the collective team did well, where they could improve, and one thing they observed that they didn’t think of prior to observing that behavior.

Supplemental Coaching Strategies:

Î 30-Second Coaching: Reinforce the team’s ability to confront conflict through communication by taking 30 seconds to verbally acknowledge the efforts made by the team to face conflict. Be specific in letting them know what they did well and how it will benefit them on the path toward reaching their goal. Î Video-Based Coaching: Find and send the team a funny video about what happens when a team doesn’t communicate in a constructive way. Using video clips from office TV shows like The Office, Parks and Recreation, or something of your choosing will allow your team to reflect on some of the hyperbolic behaviors and how they manifest in themselves without really calling anyone out directly. It also eases the tension or potential stress surrounding the subject area.
