Lacking Awareness of Improvement Opportunities
Suggested Strategy: Using a Rule of Engagement, you set the tone for the individual in your coaching session that they will not be allowed to respond with “nothing” or “I can’t think of anything” related to their areas that may need improvement. This will be a good starting point for the individual to open themselves up to being coached.
Suggested Questions:
Î Rule of Engagement: Without saying “nothing” or that you “can’t think of anything right now,’’ I would like you to share with me one area of your performance that you may have some room for improvement in. Î Success Imperative: What actions might you be willing to take to reach ultimate success by improving in this area?
Suggested Activities:
Î GOAL-Based Coaching: This is a great strategy to help the individual find their emotional connections to their goals, and what truly motivates them to reach success. What does the individual aspire to be Great at in their position? What Opportunities might be afforded to the individual by becoming great? What Actions must the individual take to bring those opportunities within reach? What will the individual Love about reaching their goals? (The last question should reveal the individual’s true motivations.) Î Whiteboard Coaching: This type of coaching takes some of the potentially uncomfortable feelings that the individual might experience in being coached by giving them something to focus on rather than sitting face to face with you. On the left side of the board, write down how the individual would describe their current actions/behavior/ abilities in the area that they identified as having an opportunity to improve. On the right side of the board, write down how the individual would describe what the ideal actions/behavior/abilities in that area
