Suggested Learning Projects:
Î Journal-Based Coaching: Assign your coaching target to keep a journal with entries noting situations in the coming weeks where they were required to put their interpersonal skills to the test. What strategies did they take in those situations to mindfully practice their skills and what were the perceived outcomes of their interactions? Did they notice any differences between these conversations and similar ones that they had in the past? Î Tangible Successes: Ask the individual to come back to your next coaching session with the three interpersonal interactions they believed to be the most successful from the week. What skills did they implement to create a successful outcome from the interaction, and how can they continue to practice these skills in similar scenarios going forward?
Supplemental Coaching Strategies:
ΠObservational Coaching: Ask the individual to observe their peers as they engage in conversations with others in the office. What were the differences they observed between conversations where high levels of interpersonal skill were implemented and conversations where the level of interpersonal skill wasn’t quite as high? In those interactions with high levels of interpersonal skill, what strategies or takeaways from their observations can the individual you are coaching put into practice in their own interactions? Π30-Second Coaching: Take 30 seconds of your day to verbally acknowledge the efforts made by the individual you are coaching to improve their interpersonal skills. Be specific in sharing the actions taken that you had observed and let them know why those actions are beneficial to the individual as they work toward the goals discussed earlier.
