Building Trust Through Active Listening

Suggested Strategy: Trust comes through a variety of things, but arguably one of the most important behaviors you can demonstrate is active listening. Highlight your own relationship with trust to allow your employee/manager to reflect on their own experience without directly calling them out.

Suggested Questions:

Î Hypothetical Question: Hypothetically speaking, if I were to ask you to rate my active listening ability, what would you give me on a scale of one to six, with six being I consistently demonstrate active listening, and one I rarely, if ever, demonstrate active listening? What behaviors or techniques could I work on to develop better active listening skills? Î Rating Question: Now, do the same thing for yourself as the previous question. If you had to rate your ability to demonstrate active listening, where would you rate yourself on that same scale and why? Do we have things in common that we need to work on? Different? Why do you think that is?

Suggested Activities:

Î Demo Me + The Sword: “Just so I don’t make assumptions with your active listening skills, could you demo me any appropriate responses and behaviors that take place in an active listening situation?” Use that activity to highlight any areas that need improvement and have the employee keep track through their learning project.
