Perspective Taking & Trust

Suggested Strategy: The ability to take the perspectives of others, or empathize, is the difference between sympathizing and empathizing. Help build this skill by using reflections on one’s own experience, and how they can translate that to taking the perspective of others.

Suggested Questions:

Î Hypothetical Question: Hypothetically speaking, if you had to describe your ability to empathize with your coworkers or employees, what would you say and why? Î Risk Question: What risk do you assume by not working on your ability to empathize with others? What risk does this pose to you as an individual as well as your team? Î Opposite Insertion Question: What will you do to evaluate your life experiences and learn how to apply them towards perspective taking with your employees or teammates?

Suggested Activities:

Î Role Play: Go through a scenario with your target employee where you feel that empathizing would serve as a tool to build trust. Then, after the role play, have the employee go through what they felt they did well, what they could improve on, and things they didn’t think of until after. Use this as a tool to guide your employee on their expectations for empathy in the weeks to come.
