The Strategies of Coaching When first coaching, you’re typically looking for something called an effort. That is the first step in the Three Levels of Change: 1. Effort 2. Progress 3. Results It is critical we understand this process, one we cannot rush as much as we would like. Returning to the prior example, wouldn’t it be great to approach someone with a negative attitude and tell them to cut it out, and have that actually work. If that worked, we probably wouldn’t even have a coaching industry. We are dealing with people, their emotions and what they’re going through, along with their willingness, and most importantly their self-awareness. The Definition of Coaching 1. Getting someone to look in the mirror. 2. Getting someone to take action. For thirty years, we have found coaching as a two-step process. Very few people do # 1 arbitrarily on their own. So, what is a leader to do? Start with the good things people do, which opens the doors where they have opportunities to improve. If we only focus on the things people do wrong or need fixing, this will psychologically wear on them and ultimately lead them to merely nod in agreement when in fact they’re nodding off and simply tuning us out. This document is designed to give you questioning skills, an insight when to use those questions, as long with questioning models that can be applied to a variety of situations.
