Coachability
Green Light: Let’s Get Going
1. Ask the person you’re coaching what is the definition of someone being successfully coachable? 2. Ask them to itemize the things people need to do to illustrate coachability. 3. Write their responses on a sheet of paper or a whiteboard and use it together as a catalyst to create a definition of coachability that can be used going forward.
Yellow Light: Needs Attention
1. Assuming there is a definition of coachability, ask the person(s) you are coaching to itemize specific actions they are taking that represent coachability and in its definition, and maybe some areas where they feel like they might be lacking in what help they might need. Again, this activity can be used with a whiteboard and with time to reflect to truly think about their responses which typically leads to greater self- awareness and honesty.
Red Light: Needs Immediate Attention
1. Assuming you have spent a decent amount of time with someone who is still resisting the process of working well with others or becoming coachable, one of the great things you can do is simply lead with a statement and add time to reflect for several days. Here is the statement: We have an opportunity to turn things around immediately and I would ask you to think about that seriously. Think about specific things you need to change and improve in order to embrace the process of becoming coached and working well with others, and what you specifically need to do to facilitate that. With that said, let’s get back together in a couple days and I want you to write 2 thought-out actions you’re willing and are going to take.
