Communication
Green Light: Let’s Get Going
1. Communication is a huge topic and it is advised to have a great definition, and this could be an activity such as: Ask the person(S) you are coaching to define communication with the following formula: Communication is... (fill in the blank) by doing what... (list attributes and actions.) This is a great first activity and allows for specificity of communication to become targeted expectations.
Yellow Light: Needs Attention
1. Assuming you have a definition in place, we suggest you coach to those expectations. If progress is not being achieved, bring out the definition and ask the person(s) you are coaching to identify the areas they’re exhibiting strengths, and then identify the areas where they have opportunities to continue to improve. 2. Feel free to offer additional areas of where they exhibit strengths and have opportunities to improve.
Red Light: Needs Immediate Attention
1. Using the definition of communication as a catalyst for the conversation, ask them to itemize the areas they need to improve for communication to become more successful, and ask them to write down the specific actions they’re going to take to embrace those expectations, and the specific changes they need to make to become successful.
