Emotional Intelligence
Green Light: Let’s Get Going
1. There are five major tenants of emotional intelligence such as self- awareness, self-regulation, empathy, motivation, and social skills. These are easily searched with definition on Google. 2. Introduce the five concepts and ask your employee or employees where they have strengths and where they have opportunities to improve, and to write those down on a sheet of paper or on a whiteboard.
Yellow Light: Needs Attention
1. Assuming an area of emotional intelligence has been chosen, areas like self-awareness or self regulation are typically the two major tenants people start with. Let’s assume self-awareness and the definition is clearly understood, ask your employees being coached where they exhibit strengths and where they have opportunities to improve. 2. Ask them to keep that list available at all times where they can see it easily every day, and to review the list before your coaching sessions.
Red Light: Needs Immediate Attention
1. Assuming an area of emotional intelligence is lacking, one great activity is to identify that area (let’s use something like self regulation) where they have exhibited disruptive behaviors, ask them the following question and have them answer on a whiteboard or paper the following: When exhibiting this type of behavior, what impact does that have on you personally and what impact does it have on your teammates? 2. Give them a good 15 to 20 minutes to complete this activity. Even though it seems rudimentary, time will help them discover the impact their lack of emotional intelligence has had on others.
