Engagement
Green Light: Let’s Get Going
1. Engagement is a very nebulous topic, and very vague in terms of people’s interpretations. One great activity is to ask the person(s) being coached to define what successful engagement is. 2. Use the following formula: Engagement is... (fill in the blank) by doing what... (have them list the attributes and actions that support the definition.)
Yellow Light: Needs Attention
1. Assuming you have a definition, one great activity is to pick an element from that definition, such as active listening. When you pick one area this is going to require knowledge of what the expectation is and then think about how you can go about facilitating practice. 2. Again, using our example of active listening, most people don’t arbitrarily practice active listening on their own, so think of ways that you can facilitate that practice with your individual(s) being coached in this area.
Red Light: Needs Immediate Attention
1. Assuming you have a definition and you’ve been coaching for a while, if someone is still lacking engagement ask yourself why. Is it because improvement is stalled or are they unwilling. This will dictate the type of activities who can go forward at this stage. 2. If someone is lacking willingness, then perhaps go back to questions and ask them what is their willingness to truly improve and what are the risks if they don’t improve? 3. If progress is simply slowed or stalled, then apply greater cadence and bring in other people such as peer-based coaches or other mentors. Together they can practice, such interactions can happen outside of your coaching conversations.
