Motivation

Green Light: Let’s Get Going

1. When coaching motivation, don’t try to motivate until you first understand what motivates. A simple way to understand this is to ask: “What is your end game or where do you want to end up? Or what would you love to be doing that maybe you’re not doing right now as much as you’d like?” 2. When someone starts answering, a great activity is to write these things down on paper or up on a whiteboard for visualization purposes. 3. Once these things are written down, it provides further context for further activities.

Yellow Light: Needs Attention

1. Assuming an area of motivation has been identified, create an activity within your coaching sessions where they teach you what they’ve specifically done to pursue that motivation and where they feel like they’re improving. This activity seems simple yet can be very powerful when it becomes an expectation for future coaching sessions.

Red Light: Needs Immediate Attention

1. When somebody exhibits a stall as it relates to their motivation, there could be a variety of factors. If someone is just losing sight to their motivation it could be prioritization or organization. On the other hand, if someone has extenuating circumstances you might end up coaching things like resilience or overcoming fear or challenge. 2. Identify the stall and then ask for them to reflect and truly identify and itemize attributes that are stalling their motivation or pursuit of their motivation.
