Productivity

Green Light: Let’s Get Going

1. When it comes to productivity, this is a very ambiguous and wide term. We suggest to ask people where they have strengths when it comes to their personal productivity, and where they have opportunities to improve. 2. Find a definition of true productivity and share that definition with the person(s) you’re coaching and ask them to itemize their strengths and areas of opportunity to improve, specific to that definition as a framework for further conversation.

Yellow Light: Needs Attention

1. Assuming a definition of productivity has been determined, ask the person(s) you’re coaching to identify what they can do to accelerate their improvement specific to the definition, and itemize where they might need help. 2. Ask them to write the responses up on a whiteboard and then to take a few minutes to reflect upon that list they created. Visualization is powerful because when people can visualize what they need to change become more willing in terms of participation.

Red Light: Needs Immediate Attention

1. Assuming productivity is lacking and coaching has commenced for some period of time without improvement, consider drawing a line in the sand and share a statement such as: “We need to improve our productivity very quickly, and I’d like you to itemize two things you are going to do specifically that will facilitate your productivity improvement and what you need from me. 2. This activity can be done with time and reflection with you as the coach leaving the room to give them time, or to let them do it between coaching sessions. Reflection tends to breed more honesty and self-awareness.
