Progress

Green Light: Let’s Get Going

1. When it comes to progress, we suggest coaching to progress specific to an area such as conflict or teamwork, etc. 2. Ask them to itemize where they’re progressing and where they feel like they’ve hit some roadblocks specific to progress in a particular area. 3. Write down their responses on a whiteboard for visualization purposes and keep a snapshot of that whiteboard going forward.

Yellow Light: Needs Attention

1. Assuming coaching has commenced, and progress is not being achieved at the rate both parties would like, facilitate a gap analysis using a whiteboard. Draw out three columns labeled 1, 2, and 3, with column 1 as the present state, column 3 as the ideal state, and column 2 as the actions to drive progress toward the ideal state. 2. Ask questions for each one of the states such as your current state where do you feel like you’re progressing, column three the ideal state ask where do they feel like they’re progressing and where do they feel hindered or stalled , and then ask what actions do we need to take moving progress towards the ideal state? Write their responses down on the whiteboard and this will serve as a catalyst to go forward.

Red Light: Needs Immediate Attention

1. Assuming progress has been identified in terms of where it’s progressing and where it’s potentially stalled, accelerate the cadence of application which usually means practice or some reinforcement of learning. 2. Itemize the area where there’s a stall and work with the person(s) you’re coaching to itemize the specific things that can be done to accelerate that improvement.
