Green Light: Let’s Get Going

1. Self-development is powerful, and if employees invested in it more it would support training and make coaching and mentoring easy to implement. Ask people to identify the power of self development and how it can personally benefit them, and what they are currently doing and what they’re willing to do specific to self development going forward to achieve success.

Yellow Light: Needs Attention

1. Assuming a definition and a set of expectations have been created specific to self development, make it in action or the person(s) you are coaching to teach you what they are doing from a self development perspective and the benefits they are deriving as a result. Relate it back and compare those actions to the definition.

Red Light: Needs Immediate Attention

1. Assuming coaching has been applied to self development and results or progress have not being achieved to both parties’ satisfaction, ask them to write down what they perceive the gaps are and what actions of increased cadence they could take that would facilitate improvement in those gaps. The language of this activity will be critical as most people being coached will not have previously considered this perspective.
